CHICAGO PD SEARCHING FOR SUSPECT WHO STOLE AMBULANCE
The headline alert pops up on Matt’s phone as he’s getting ready for work. Apple regularly alerts him to news they think he’ll be interested in and the accuracy of their insight never ceases to worry and amaze him. Smart phones and the internet are useful but creep him the hell out sometimes.
Whatever they used to seek out and present this headline to him is right on because this is exactly the kind of news he needs to see. Does he want to see it? No, but he needs to know what’s happening in his city, especially to his colleagues.
“Did you see this?” He asks Kelly as he passes him for the coffeemaker.
“Seriously?” Severide asks as he glances over the headline on Matt’s phone. “A city ambo or a private one?”
“Private,” Matt answers as he skims the article. “But the guy was dressed in turn outs apparently. After he stole the ambo he stole an old man’s car, saying he needed it for an emergency.”
Severide rolls his eyes. “They better find this idiot. The last thing we need is some guy out there giving us a bad name.”

She recognized the lust in his gaze just as he darted forward, his hands framing her face and pushing her into the apartment while his lips descended on hers hungrily. Her brain stopped working the moment she could feel the softness of his lips against hers, and in the back of her mind she registered the loud bang of the front door being thrown shut behind him, together with the clang of his keys hitting the ground.

He watches her eyes flutter open as Kidd, Gallo, and Mouch all hover around her. The captains brow furrows and he clenches his jaw as he watches Sylvie drain of color. There were some harsh whispers back and forth and then Sylvie had dragged him to a table in the back. They were no longer in Matt’s line of sight but he tried to keep his ears tuned to the faint sound of Sylvie’s voice, listening for any signs of distress.
Fifteen minutes later, he no longer had to strain so hard to hear either of them.
“Right, of course,” Grainger says with a bitter chuckle. “Friends, yeah. That’s exactly what I want. It’s not like I don’t have enough of those.”
“Greg—“
“I should have known,” he interrupts, not even bothering to keep his voice down. “The guys tried to warn me. They said you played this same game with Sheffield. Led him on and then ran away—“
“That simply isn’t true,” Sylvie rebuts firmly. “You have no idea what happened with Kyle. You shouldn’t pretend you do.”

Her body registers the pain before she is fully aware, the deep pulse throbbing under her closed eyelids so intense she nearly loses consciousness again. Nausea threatens to overwhelm her. Concussion, she thinks. She takes a few deep breaths and her stomach seems to settle. Tentatively, she opens her eyes and slowly pulls herself up into a sitting position. Her hair is sticking to her forehead and she reaches up to push it away. When she lowers her hand, her fingers are covered with coagulated blood.
