Someone would point out the clock, and he would have to say he couldn’t even hear one.
The buzzing hurt his head. The light was too bright.
Much too bright. Not like how the sun provided sanctuary from the dark, how it shines off water, or how it rises every day, despite sadness— despite war. Not how his classmates shine. Not how they fill the sky with explosions and fire and lightning.

"Hitoshi," Shouta starts but Hitoshi interrupts him before he can even fully decide what he wants to say.
"I'm sorry, okay, I'm so, so sorry. It was a miscalculation," Hitoshi rushes out, his head ducked the entire time he speaks and Shouta doesn't even have to check to know that he's shaking.
"It wasn't a miscalculation," Shouta calmly says, despite the way Hitoshi flinches. "It was exactly what you were meant to do. We were sparring. You're supposed to land a hit on me."
"No," Hitoshi gasps out, "no, that's not acceptable, I didn't mean to!" His eyes dart up and skim over Shouta's face and the entire colour drains out of Hitoshi's face when his eyes fall on the bruise on Shouta's jaw.
