    Summary

Out of nowhere in May, sometime soon after Randall's adoption was finalized, Alex's brother-in-law Stephen announced that it was "high time" he took his wife on a second honeymoon cruise. [Steve] proposed to the Gorens that, while he and Elizabeth were away, they use their apartment; bring their collie and the budgie and spend two weeks in New York City visiting old haunts and old friends.

"We're here to sightsee and chill," Alexandra Eames said, and Robert Goren agreed. Two full weeks in New York City with their children Olivia and Randall, to see all those tourist attractions native New Yorkers never visited, sounded like a perfect cap to summer vacation. But uncomfortable--and sometimes brutal--secrets lurk in the city streets, both past and present.

The stories in this series build on one another and should be read in order, starting with the opening piece, "Requited." The previous title in this series was "Surprise!"

Robert Goren searched the interior of his wife's Honda Pilot, then called over his shoulder, "Eames? Wasn't there another bag?"

    Just plain fluff and fun.

    Summary

Bobby regarded her pensively. Back in January, it seemed a fun summer activity: attending SpaceFest, a science-fiction/fantasy/nostalgia event in July. The memberships were reasonable; the promise of writing and publishing panels attracted him; and Olivia and Randall would enjoy the Star Trek programming...

Bobby Goren, Alex Eames, two adopted kids, and a nostalgic science-fiction convention. What could go wrong?

Add a classic 1960s television star, an old friend from the NYPD, some vintage--and valuable--series props, and someone who wants dearly to get their hands on them...

He sighed. "I don't remember our schools having elaborate last day rituals when we were kids."

Randall's adoption has been hurdled successfully. But, still, there are some significant events as school closes for the year.

Just a bit of fluff for the beginning of summer vacation.

    Summary

Early on, [their attorney] was the one who'd warned them of Judge Sakai.

"He's a skilled arbitrator," she conceded, "but he's on the edge of retirement. He remembers the legacy of Native American boarding schools and children removed from minority parents without cause, and is reluctant that families should be split when no abuse was involved. With Randall's father being alive, he's a problem."

In October 2024, Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames began the long process of adopting their foster son Randall Shaw; now, 18 months later, all the inspections and interviews are over--but will a judge who's determined not to make the mistakes of the past work against their dreams?

Coming up on the hour, his cell phone rang, and he reluctantly tore his attention away from his computer screen to dismiss what was probably a spam call.

    Southbury Police?

A carefree winter school vacation turns sinister for the Goren family when a call from the police station plummets them into an ongoing investigation into child trafficking in the area, an investigation that now hits close to home.

    Summary

Someone was tapping at the bedroom door. "Mama?"

Alexandra Eames Goren had been sound asleep on her right side, cushioned by Bobby's bulk behind her as good as a toasty heating pad, with his arm thrown carelessly around her belly. Now, as her nose and one eye peeped from under the covers, she knew instantly what was wrong...

Olivia, who stood framed in the doorway, arms hugging herself and hunched up even in a warm robe, complained, "It's cold."

One big snowstorm equals no electricity. Family fluff and fun stuff, before the next installment, which gets very dark.

Olivia sighed. "We don't have enough money."

    "But it's perfect," Randall argued.

..."What's wrong?" Alex asked, coming behind them with her cart full...

    Summary

A delicate hostage negotiation following a child's kidnapping proves exhausting for Major Case partners Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames. When a crisis is averted, a sojourn for food and then some rest morphs into a most unlikely encounter.

Stand-alone Goren and Eames story, and not part of my series. Non "ship" for those who dislike it. Something a little different for the Winter Solstice. Enjoyed writing this: hope you enjoy reading it.

Good or bad, Shaw was his father. Blood didn't matter.

"Auntie," Bobby said quietly, "there was something I wanted to tell you before we left. We were talking about truth..."

"Rand, you know what this is about. Come clean," Bobby requested.

The boy's face darkened when he admitted, "Some girl in her class. Olivia said she's Nellie Oleson. Isn't that the mean girl on TV in Little House?"

"As in the books, yes. Thanks."

Randall also disappeared behind the swinging door. Alex sighed. "I guess it was only a matter of time before she ran into the Mean Girls contingent."

Olivia Goren's first day in the Upper School brings on an unexpected challenge; at home, a surprise--and sinister--message in the mailbox puts Robert Goren and Alexandra Eames on guard.

    Summary

"So," Olivia Goren said, leaning forward in her seat as the Honda Pilot crept up in the line approaching the long, low brick-and-concrete structure, "will we see a real Mountie this year?"

"You saw them last year, Min," Robert Goren told his daughter from the driver's seat in front of her. "You can't expect them to look like Sergeant Preston."

"Who?" Olivia and her foster brother Randall asked in unison.

Alexandra Eames Goren, her dancing eyes hidden under her wide-brimmed sun hat as she reclined in the passenger seat, said, suppressing a laugh, "You're dating yourself, Bobby."

"You carry crime-scene booties in your bag?" Alex asked, dumbfounded.

"Well, these days I never know when I’ll be called to a crime scene," was the explanation...

Alex whispered in Bobby’s ear, "You never mentioned you had a younger, geekier sister, either."

A young couple on an autumn hike in a Connecticut park enlist the help of Robert Goren, Alex Eames, and their adopted children when they find something unsavory in the woods. But some NYPD detectives are there to pitch in as well.

These stories build on one another and are best read in order. A partially whimsical tale that went unfinished until July 3, 2025. Chronologically it goes between "Kintsugi" and "Quiver."

    Summary

Set next to the shelving was a battered old table, where Alex stood thumbing through a box, hair partially curtaining her face, deep in thought. One of his boxes. One specific box that made him stop and take a deep breath--it had a deep crease in the side, dating from the day they'd argued over it, the day he could have lost her after finally finding her again.

Sometimes the past arises when you least expect it. When is it time to let go?

    Summary

"A writer's conference?" Robert Goren repeated speculatively.

"It's actually part conference and part publisher exhibition," Zes continued, leaning forward. "The first part of the week they hold discussion groups and roundtables and have panels, then later in the week the conference is opened to the public to interact with the authors. It's unique in that aspect, a cross between a writers' seminar and a book fair."

The first steps in promoting Bruno Volpe's war journal, edited by Robert Goren, have begun. The family will travel north to Springfield, MA, where they'll make new friends and encounter several old ones, recalling a tragic family murder that occurred while Goren and Eames worked in Major Case--and also the price of expectations on the survivors.

The stories in this series all build on one another and should be read in order starting with "Requited." The previous title in this series was "Blue Christmas."

"The Wizard" and "Princess Ozma" are the roles they play hosting a trivia game. Abril Diaz lives in the house next door with her two grandchildren Carlos and Ana, and Viola Perrino is a mutual friend. Chronologically takes place between the stories "Kintsugi" and "Quiver," and is a sequel to "Madness." Started for Kinktober, but lost in Real Life.

She said we had to be very careful and be still and have the paint put on our hand and not touch ourselves, even with a big apron on. Marvin Cagle didn't listen to her and got paint all over his shirt and-"

As Randall continued his story, Bobby saw Olivia give a troubled, regretful look at the palmprint turkey, and a tiny sigh hitched at her breath.
