“Mari?”
But when I try to lift myself up, Mari shakes her head and her grip on me tightens. A drop of water lands on my head. Then another. And another. It’s then that I notice Mari’s haggard breathing.
Oh.
“Dummy…”

Pretending the last 5 minutes of the finale don't exist and that instead we got an entire episode focusing on the aftermath of everything that happened.

Summary
the old law only knows one ending, for humans and mermaids are not meant to be. if a mermaid princess does find love in the surface, the story has always known what to do with the wreckage.
no one ever wrote down what happens when it doesn’t end in wreckage at all.
(edit as of september 21st, 2026: the finale gave me mixed feelings, so this fic will continue to update lmao)

Summary
Lara set the frame down and turned around, her crimson hair catching the golden sunlight. A soft, radiant smile curved her lips as she gazed at Mari and the deep, unwavering devotion shining in her dark eyes.
"I'm home, Mari," Lara said softly, stepping closer until there was no distance left between them at all.
Or, 3 years later, Lara comes back permanently to stay. And she didn’t forget her promise of baking a cake.

Summary
Lara is not heavy. That’s the first thing Mari notices when she pulls her out of the water, both dripping wet and tired, Lara’s legs covered in cuts for days. Hauling Lara onto her back is as instinctual as breathing, and so is, she imagines, the way Lara wraps her arms around Mari’s neck for balance. A small wobble, a grunt, and Mari is walking.

Summary
She loved Mari. And Mari loved her in return. But it was not the way she wanted. Lara could share the same water, the same earth, the same sun, the same air, as Mari. But she would never be able to share the same breath.
"You assumed my answer."

Summary
Mari, fifteen years old. Standing in front of the checkered blue backdrop with the prefecture's crest stamped over and over behind her like wallpaper. She had a gold medal looped around her neck and a trophy in one hand, its little red gem catching the light funny. Her hair was flat with old sweat, and she stared wide-eyed into the camera with an expression that wasn't quite a smile—more like she hadn't figured out yet how to arrange her face around something this big. And beside her, red hair a wild halo under the fluorescent lights—
—Lara.
Also fifteen. Holding up Mari’s certificate with both hands like it was hers instead of Mari's, looking so unreasonably delighted that you'd think she'd been the one to win.
Mari remembers that Lara hadn't even been able to read half the kanji on it. Had asked, loudly in the middle of the ceremony, what it said.
Almost three years now.
It doesn’t feel like it was that long ago. It feels like last week, and also like something that had happened to somebody else.
Mari looks at the photo for a long time.

Summary
Here on the surface, Mari is the only home that Lara has ever wanted to return to. Her lips graze against Mari’s skin. The shell of her ear. Her jaw. The nape of her neck. Like thunder trails lightning, so do her tears.
Mari blushes and grumbles. Laughs at how much it tickles. Falters a bit in her step when Lara pecks her lips in the flurry of kisses, though the shock isn’t enough to drop her.
The first thing that Mari says with her face all red is this: “That’s not fair. I'm carrying you right now so I can’t do anything. My hands are tied here.”

"Book, chapter, verse," her mother reminds her, touching the title again.
Mari coughs. "Job… Chapter 1," she reads aloud, looking up as her mother nods with a smile. She looks down again and continues. "There once was a man who lived in the land of-" She stops, squinting harder at the words on the page.
"Uz."
"Uz," Mari repeats. "His name was Job."
Or, Lara and Mari, on life.

Summary
What happens when you leave two teenagers alone in a room with the excuse of "taking care of each other's scars" and zero adult supervision?
Lara and Mari on any given night after the Lake Biwa incident. Finding true love had some aftermath; for instance, a former mermaid princess learning to walk on her new legs, and a boxer who literally had her heart pierced by a magic dagger.
A space to heal, some raging hormones, and they end up being the most love-struck creatures in the universe. Lara has no filter and Mari is beyond saving.
Because getting naked in the dim light isn't just about taking off your clothes, it's showing the person you gave your life for that both of you are still here, breathing and ready to walk together towards the future.-_-_-_-_-_-
# After the ending I tried to write an angst fic for the girls just for the love of drama, and the one who ended up angsty was me. So this is pure fluff and slightly spicy cheesiness.

Summary
If Lara's feelings could summon the powers of Mother Nature, they surely would have sent a gust of wind sweeping leaves and flowers into the storage room in a whirlwind strong enough to shove the massive door against its frame with a violent bang that made the whole structure creak, shook the ceiling beams, and sent the ceiling lights swaying. Such a beautiful metaphor would have been a waste not to make real.
— What was that soun—
Mari was not easily startled, but anyone would have been surprised by a noise exploding behind them. When she realized it was the door, a bad feeling washed over her. She turned and hurried to the entrance.
One push. Two pushes. The door still would not budge.
— You've got to be kidding me… — On the third try, she threw her body against the wood. — Why couldn't they have put in a normal door?!
Maybe now Mari cared about that centuries-old latch.
OR: Lara and Mari end up trapped in the school storage room with all the time in the world to get to know each other.

Summary
Lara nodded once, keeping her hands clasped tightly against her skirts. She held the stranger's gaze, her expression guarded, yet curious.
"I'm Mari," the recruit offered casually, taking another step closer. "What’s your name?"
Lara opened her mouth, but only a soft, breathy sigh escaped her throat.
