Max just wants intimacy. He's distrustful and self-protective, but god, he just wants to let himself open up and exist safely in someone else's hands.

It’s been five years since then, and every day Charles wonders what happened. He’d asked all their mutual friends, and then he’d even tried just Max’s friends, and eventually he’d even decided to bother Sophie and Victoria, but nobody would tell him anything. Charles has thought of everything in that time: maybe Max was sick. Maybe his mother was sick. Maybe Red Bull had wanted something Max couldn’t give. Maybe Max had just decided he simply didn’t want to get in a car one more time.
Maybe he’d regretted what happened between them, and simply couldn’t look Charles in the eyes.
Without a single photo of Max in the last five years, Charles had even wondered, in his darkest, saddest moments, whether Max had died.
Now, standing in a patisserie, in a tiny rural town in France, Charles finally has his answer.

“I just don’t understand,” Charles says, rubbing his cheek against the sheets. “I did nothing wrong, it’s not my fault he turned into me! It was very mean that they booed me.”
If anyone had the right to be upset, it’s Checo. Charles knows better than most the bitter disappointment of not winning his home race. But Checo had been very clear in his interviews that it wasn’t Charles fault, that he hadn’t seen Max, that he’d gone for the gap and that was on him, not Charles.
“It’s very disrespectful,” Max agrees quietly.
Charles opens his eyes to look at Max, at the way he’s frowning down at the sheets himself now.
He groans. “You must think I’m so stupid. People are so mean to you everywhere. The booing and chanting through the anthem last week was so terrible, and here I am complaining about one stupid—”
“I’ve gotten used to it now,” Max says, but Charles thinks that he wouldn’t look so sad if that were true. “But I cried for three days the first time it happened.”

Rapid fire thoughts in French pour into his head, each more hysterical sounding than the last. He recognizes “merde”, “putain”, and “pensée” and that’s it. Unhelpful.
“Charles,” he murmurs, slightly apologetic, “French.”
Charles’ eyes get even bigger, his eyebrows shooting up to his hairline. He makes a noise that if Max were a slightly less merciful person he would call a squeak. Watching him make the absolutely unhinged connection in real time is fascinating. Then carefully, in tentative English, You are hearing my thoughts?
Miserable, Max nods. Then shrugs. Fuck.
“Max,” Charles practically hisses, his grip on Max’s hand going tighter. The pinprick of his nails feels like the only thing connecting Max to the earth. “What the fuck?”
