“Just dancing, as I said.” The bartender raised a finger. “No kissing, cuddling, touching or petting. None of that here. Just dancin’. Elegantly, maybe even seductively, but nothin’ more. You’ve got no idea just how gently and daintily these scruffy miners can dance, son. It’s a sight to make you weep.”
--When Marty becomes stuck in 1885, he takes a job at the Palace Saloon to earn money for him and Doc. Unfortunately, he catches the eye of Buford Tannen, who takes a liking to 'Marlene'.

He looked up, squinting through the oil-lamp-punctuated dimness to where Einstein was still barking and dashing back and forth. Dusk-light through the window of Emmett's front entrance was faint, ethereal, casting the skin of the intruder Einstein had backed up against it in an ashen glow. Whoever it was, they weren't that tall, and Emmett could hear soft, swallowed whimpers between each harsh breath.
Young, he thought. Scared.
"Please don't hurt me!" said the intruder, one palm flat against the door, the other curled around some small object, as Einstein jumped up in an attempt to give the kid's face a welcoming lick.

Once upon a time, Alexander Saxton and Dr. Wells were young and wildly in love. (As opposed to middle-aged and wildly in love which they will also be.)
At this point the story is more about tackling the subject of men in love in the Victorian era, which was not the most comfortable era for men to be in love.
