Doc told him not to gamble. Told him a thousand times since they've been stuck in the Old West that cards is the quickest way dead. You'd think after seven months he'd have taken it to heart. But they need the money. The DeLorean is so close to being fixed and he can't wait another six months to afford the aluminum tubing they need. So he gambled.
Looks like he lost.
