“What’s wrong?” Stede asks him, as if nothing at all has happened, as if he wasn’t just— just laying dead in the shadows of Ed’s nightmares, as if Ed didn’t know what his eyes looked like without light in them, now.
Ed doesn’t even ask him why the fuck he’s in the wardrobe, or explain the horrible dream he’s had, or try to understand what the hell’s happening. All he wants is Stede, and he’d thought he was gone, and he’s here; he doesn’t need to know anything more than that. He’s here.
Stumbling forward, Ed collides with Stede as soon as he can reach him, wrapping him up in a sloppy, disoriented embrace, nearly tangling them up in his haste to get his arms around him. Their heads almost knock; Stede catches him, and Ed twists to bury his face in Stede’s throat, instead.

“Edward, you killed Lucius.”
The world tilts as if they’ve been rocked by a harsh wave, but it seems that it’s only Ed that notices it. Stede stands there, shoulders back and head held high, steady on his feet. Izzy is struggling in Jim’s hold behind him, face alight with fury. Jim just tightens their grip and sighs.
Ed feels nothing at all.
“I did,” he says, toneless. “You killed me.”

Summary
Stede placed his gentle hands over Ed’s, looking into his soul with stern but sincere eyes.
Ed ripped his hands away, as if he’d been burned.
He was no longer in control, in the same way that months ago Izzy had attempted to touch him the same way. While Izzy and Stede could not be more different on the surface, both of them had a way of ripping away Ed’s layers, and breaking down his walls. Regardless of either of their intentions, it all felt the same, helpless, humiliating, and raw.
“Don’t touch me. Don’t ever fucking touch me. Not again.”
The notion of love was never welcomed in Ed's mind. His father sure didn't love him, and his mother had only whispered it to Ed when she thought he was asleep. It was a weight he carried through the decades, after awhile, after all he had done, the worry of those words ceased to exist, considering no one could ever love him anyway.
Then, Stede came along, and turned Ed inside out.

Summary
Ed dropped his sword, and it landed with a clatter on the deck. There were several gasps and shocked curses from the crew, and a string of obscenities from Izzy. Stede sighed gratefully, his shoulders sagging, a relieved but tentative smile spreading across his face.
“Ed, thank you. I—”
Ed’s face did not change. He kept his eyes fixed on Stede as he firmly but gingerly took Stede’s still-raised blade in his hand, and placed it directly to his heart. Stede’s brow furrowed, and he opened his mouth, but Ed cut him off.
“Do it. Take The Revenge back.”
Stede just gaped at him, lost for words. He shook his head slightly, tried to draw back his blade, but Ed was holding it in place. His hand had curled around the edges of the sword and it was beginning to bite into his skin, drawing blood in long, straight lines.
“I’m already dead. There’s nothing more you can do to hurt me.”

Stede returns, three months later. He hopes a grand gesture will put him back in Ed's good graces, but just how grand will it have to be?

Hannibal tilts his head to the side. "And where does this appreciation for the care of leather footwear come from? It's quite uncharacteristic of you."
Will scratches the back of his neck. "I was a shoe shiner throughout college. I spent a lot of time thinking about shoes and I always saw the same type of low-grade leather come in, needing way more work than I could offer. I learned a lot. My boss tried to convince me to quit studying and work full-time."
