Summary
Entering an actual relationship near the very beginning of when they first meet, Shane is still paranoid about pictures of them getting shared so Ilya buys him a Polaroid camera instead to document their relationship all the way back from 2012. The only problem is that he never intended for Yuna to find the album.

“I know we can’t have pictures of each other, but I still want them,” he confessed, still fiddling with Shane’s hair for his own comfort. “And I thought maybe...if they were just ours, you might be okay with it.”Shane stayed silent, eyes glancing between his tense expression and the bag as he pulled out a Polaroid camera. His thumb was gripping it so hard he thought it might crack, his anxiety manifesting physically.
“Ilya...” He paused, finally sitting up a bit more. Enough that Ilya had no choice but to let his hand fall away from his hair or else, it would seem too clingy.
“Is fine, if you don’t like idea,” he clarified, even though the thought of being rejected terrified him more than he could possibly express. “Was just a thought—”
“I like it,” Shane interjected before he could spin himself into a tizzy he would deny ever feeling in the first place.

After Rozanov pushes Shane away during the Olympics, Shane takes his friend from home up on an invitation to meet some of the other Olympic skaters. Joe grew up in Ottawa like Shane and had often been his go to support when, for all that he loved hockey, he needed a break from hockey players. Two Russian non-athletes somehow ended up in the mix of the increasingly racy Olympic Village party until the threat of homophobic violence has one of them calling for a friend.
Ilya is having a very bad time at Sochi and Svetlana calling him at 1am because Sasha is in the village getting into fights is not improving his mood. He is doubly unimpressed that Hollander is apparently at the party too. Maybe some conversations can’t be avoided.

Ilya grinned brighter on noticing the vodka bottle set square in the middle of their dining table, a blue bow around it. She returned David’s high - five as discreetly as she could as they moved to the kitchen, giving the younger couple a moment to take it all in. Dinner was a quiet, contemplative affair and soon enough, with the day coming to a close at midnight, everyone had settled somewhat.
She felt Shane’s eyes on her for longer moments all the same. Yuna knew it’d take time to adjust to this new normal after nearly a decade of the alternative. She tried for a smile and he returned it, ease returning ever so gradually. She all but dragged David back over to the sofa, content to linger here for a little while longer as they settled for the night first.

It wasn’t that he wanted to die, per say, but the thought of it became more and more appealing as the years dragged on. Oftentimes it wasn’t even because he missed his Mama, though he did, with every fiber of his being. It was just that he didn’t really feel like there was a point anymore. There was nothing to live for. Yeah, he had hockey, but even that was becoming a chore. He did it so Father wouldn’t constantly be on his ass calling him a lazy, useless waste of space. He felt as if any joy or love or any positive emotion had been covered by that thick, dark cloud that spread and spread until he could feel it in his lungs with every breath. Much like the cigarettes he was breathing in by the carton, he welcomed it. Welcomed the dark and found himself becoming intimately familiar with each whisper of its wind.

Summary
Four days before Shane expects Ilya to be back on the ice in a random home game against Tennessee, the news finally leaks.
Shane feels like he should be hiding under a table, sheltering in place. It’s not even that bad. Just a short, clinical article on ESPN. Sources close to the Boston Raiders have confirmed that Conn Smythe winner Ilya Rozanov’s mysterious SOIR is due to a suicide attempt in August. The Team Captain was in Moscow at the time, but returned to Boston as soon as he was able to recuperate and seek treatment.
As far as terroristic invasions of privacy go, it’s compassionate.
But Shane knows what it’s like to constantly be under a microscope, and he wants, more than anything, for Rozanov to not be dissected and examined like a particularly fascinating insect. He can’t do anything about it.
Or: The summer after he wins the Cup for Boston, Ilya almost dies. Shane tries to cope.
