The morning after the Netherfield Ball, while Mr Collins is proposing to Elizabeth, Mr Bennet collapses. With her father unconscious and apparently near death, her mother pressuring her to marry Mr Collins, and the gentleman himself ignoring her protests, suddenly saying 'no' is not so easy. Faced with poverty and homelessness if she continues refusing, the gossip soon reaches Netherfield that she will have to marry Mr Collins. Just as Mr Darcy is about to mount his horse and follow Mr Bingley to London, never to return, he overhears the servants talking. The thought of Elizabeth married to a fool like Mr Collins is unbearable to him, and he resolves to make her a better offer. But, when she refuses him, he finds that he's willing to do anything for love - even marry her without the hope of being with her.

Once it comes out that Bilbo is *expecting,* however, even the most prim and proper hobbits are scandalised at the poor treatment he received by the conspicuously absent father (and, by extension, all his kind).
