Sanemi had been coming home later than usual the past few weeks. He’d been calmer too and more patient around the students. Around Genya. And while that should make Genya happier to see this side of his brother again, Genya just felt sick.
It was hard to compete with an actual angel and Genya could understand why people were smitten with her, but why did she have to get her hooks into his brother?

Genya released the breath he’d been holding for an hour straight and eased himself back up slow, supporting himself on his door and acutely aware of every noise he made. He turned the knob painfully slow, opening the door with a quiet creek that made his skin run cold. When there wasn’t a response further in the apartment, Genya stuck his head out slow, skittish and paranoid before he pulled it far enough to sneak out.
Genya crept along the hallway past his brother’s room, still sweating and hot under the collar, his racing heart numbing his ears. He shook his head in an attempt to clear them, the pounding drowning his thoughts.
It will be fine, he lied to himself. This was normal. Everyone did it.
But everyone else didn’t have Shinazugawa Sanemi as a brother.

Nothing fucking worked and Genya sobbed, curled into himself as he shivered and sweat and prayed to the Gods for a lick of mercy.
Shinobu had promised he would be fine, but how could he trust that when he felt like he was going to die?
He couldn’t deal with this torture anymore, bleary eyed and delirious as he pulled himself from his pathetic attempt at a nest. It was a struggle trying to dress himself, his brain too muddled with the need for relief to get the job done. He’d shoved his legs into his pants and pulled them up and that was about all he had the strength for.
Panting and sweating and swaying as the world tipped off kilter, Genya stumbled his way out of the Stone Pillar’s estate. In hindsight, maybe he should have asked his teacher for help, the kind patient man more than willing to assist Genya in times of need before. Except Genya couldn’t think clearly like this. His brain felt like it was boiling within his skull and the path he tread was more like snapshots in his mild, blacking out and blinking back to reality only enough to note he was still moving.
In his defense, he had every intention of beelining to the Butterfly Estate.

“I won’t leave,” Genya repeated, a shudder in his voice as he forced it through.
Sanemi had known it wouldn’t be so easy but that didn’t mean it didn’t still piss him off to hear. No matter what Sanemi did to him, Genya just wouldn’t give up. Always looking with those wide sad eyes and pleading for his big brother to listen. It didn’t matter what Genya had to say. He shouldn’t be there. And if Sanemi had to push him until he broke, then that was Sanemi’s burden to bear.
The scrape of Sanemi drawing his sword echoed in the quiet room, the demon knelt at his feet tensing.
He could see the way Genya froze up, a tremble in his hands and a sweat breaking out along his temple. Rightfully nervous, but ultimately trusting. He sat and waited even as Sanemi unsheathed his weapon, as if he was so sure Sanemi wouldn’t hurt him. Even after everything, when Sanemi tried to blind him and beat him to a pulp, he trusted Sanemi completely. He called Sanemi’s bluff over and over again, and Sanemi’s hand tightened on the blade with a tremble, teeth grit so hard his jaw ached.
He’d show him.
He’d prove to Genya he didn’t belong here.
