Edward Little works at Starbucks part-time. Full time, he works on his thesis, planning to become a professor like his mother wants him to be. On the side, he plays in a punk metal band with his roommates John Irving and George Hodgson and best friend Silna Nungak. He hates his life, though he doesn’t know it.
Henry Le Vesconte sings lead vocal and plays bass part-time for his popular alt-rock band that hasn’t made it big internationally yet. Full time, he fucks anyone who will have him. On the side, he spends time with his girlfriend Jasmine Fitzjames, his partner Graham Gore, and his good friend Charlie Des Voeux. He thinks he has everything he could want in his life, but he doesn’t.

"You despise me," he mouths, the words barely there.
Henry tilts his head slightly, eyes soft with something unreadable. "I don’t," he whispers. His body leans forward, just the smallest bit. Their eyes meet, but Edward can’t hold the gaze. "I don’t." Henry repeats.
Edward is burning, nausea rising with it. He’s painfully aware of himself, of the prick still pressing against his trousers. Why, then?
"Do you love someone?"
He almost says someone else, as if making it worse was possible.Is it Hodgson, with his perfect fucking French and sharp wit? That fresh lieutenant Clark, with clear blue eyes and endless supply of whiskey? Someone from home? Someone untouched by all of this?
Henry meets his gaze, steady and quiet. "Everyone I love is dead."
Somehow, that cuts deeper. With the dead, he cannot compete.

James’s expression was openly pitying, and Henry flinched; he didn’t need his pity, not when it was James whose repeated failure had put them into this position. “He says that it defeats the purpose of the arrangement, if the lieutenants are already too close with one another. That we’re… supposed to be fostering new bonds, not hiding behind old ones.” James appeared genuinely uncomfortable to parrot the words, and Henry’s anger cooled momentarily as he was reminded that it wasn’t just him affected by this arrangement, as Sir John Barrow called it.
“That’s funny,” Henry drawled, sardonically, as he turned away from James and heavily sat himself down in a nearby chair. “That’s funny, considering Hodgson is also a pal of yours, and yet the Admiralty has no issue with forcing you to marry him.”
