Summary
Even before the last arrests have been made, it is confirmed that the Commissaire d'Arnouville was shot dead on the Rue Montmartre whilst trying to negotiate. The news about the Inspector percolates more slowly through the Préfecture de Police, at the discretion of Monsieur Gisquet.
The Inspector’s final missive was worrisome; there is a nod to expect the worst; when a cry goes up from the laundry-boats at the Pont-Neuf, no-one is entirely surprised.
The Commissaire is publicly mourned, as befits a fallen hero. The Inspector is privately but sincerely regretted, disproving one of his own conjectures: he is missed.

This is more or less a crossover between Les Miserables and Ray Bradbury's "Death Is A Lonely Business," with a few things changed and a few surprises along the way. On the day of the New Year, it is told that Thranduil and Celeborn met in the forest where they rename Mirkwood as Eryn Lasgalen, The Wood of the Greenleaves. Thranduil gave the southern part of his realm to Celeborn, and kept the northern part as far as the mountains for himself and his people. The woodlands in between were given to the Beornings and Woodmen. But they must have had a lot more to talk about than that.
This is Thranduil's tale of the War of the Ring. Whilst he fights Sauron's army in his own lands, he is haunted by dreams of his sons; his youngest in far away Gondor, and his eldest, Laersul, in the west to hold agains the goblins of the Hithaeglir and Thranduil himself leads the vanguard of the battle. His middle child, Thalos, he has left to guard the stronghold. In case all fails.

Part 2 of What It Means to be a King:
Part 2 is divided into 3 sections: Lindon, Greenwood, and Eregion. Each section is connected but can be read separately. Once the story is complete and I am up to it, I may post Section 4: The Last Alliance of Elves and MenSection 1: Lindon (Chapter 1-21) In the cold cave of Forochel, Sauron escapes his prison with plans for Gil-galad, Thranduil and Elrond.
Section 2: Greenwood (Chapters 22-64) Thranduil returns to his father and tries to fit into his new home, unaware that Sauron never forgets nor forgives.
Section 3: Eregion will be posted separately as Part 3 of this series. Sauron approaches Celebrimbor and his guild of craftsmen. And Glorfindel arrives at Middle-earth.
