Summary
Rhaenyra breathes hard at the proximity. Steps even closer. She does not know why, but she wants to. Craves it. Her usual stony restraint and goading spitefulness when dealing with a furious, self-righteous Queen Alicent having slipped away, leaving only the gnawing want underneath. A feeling that she has rarely acknowledged over these last years though it has been there all along. She feels its force course through her fiercely, unchallenged for the first time in a long time.
“You still wish to reconcile with me?” Rhaenyra whispers in astonishment.
Alicent squeezes her eyes shut, exhales shakily, but she does not move away.
“That is not- do you not see- Oh, Seven Hells.” Alicent lets out a groan of vexation and then lurches forward capturing Rhaenyra’s lips in a bruising kiss.

Summary
After months of feeling nothing, the cold came like a blessing, wrapped itself around her shoulders like the Mother’s mantle. That was not to say that Alicent thought winter would be easy. She knew it would not. As the Maesters had all been grumbling to each other while tending to the King’s pains, it was bound to be severe.
That whitish light taking the sky, covering the city like mist thicker than mist, like the breath of a baby dragon, like Aegon’s spawn, once so small that if she wanted she could have cradled it in the palm of one hand.
Not that Alicent would have, and anyway her hands were ever too cold for the touch of such creatures.

When Alicent lowered her gaze to Joffrey, she read no reproach in the little boy's eyes, merely innocent curiosity. Why weren't they friends anymore? There had been so much pain, so many elements beyond her control that had led to this situation that Alicent had never clearly dared ask herself the question, as if the answer couldn't possibly be simple anyway. And yet the words came to her naturally, like a breath too long held in her lungs.
"Because we hurt each other, mutually."
"Why?"
"Because it was so decided."
"I don't understand," muttered the child.
"I don't understand either," was all Alicent could reply.
It had been four years since Driftmark, since Aemond's lost eye and Rhaenyra's blood. Four years to pray and forget.
Four years after Driftmark, when Alicent thought she had finally forgotten, the maester announced that little Jaehaerys' lungs were sick and that only Dragonstone's sea air could cure him. Instead years of emotion and repressed words bled out and stained the air in the room with a thick tension.
Alicent felt the string of a bond that had once existed between them give a faint thrum of life once more.
Finally the space they once had to voice their emotions opened up again. Rhaenyra had one foot dangling off the abyss of the space and Alicent felt threatened to follow and push both of them in. So many times she was forced to bite her tongue and say what was expected of her. Perhaps Rhaenyra felt this way from time to time too.

Surreptitiously, she plucks at the skin of her left thumb, hands clasped demurely in her lap. Seeing Rhaenyra again after these five years apart has been a shock to her system. When Rhaenyra had been at court before, it had been as if there was an open wound, unable to heal, bleeding openly somewhere on Alicent’s body. Something Alicent couldn’t help worrying at constantly.
