Childermass sets out to deal with it and, rather than let him do so alone, Arabella Strange volunteers Major Grant to keep him company (and keep him from getting killed). It is not initially a friendly partnership, but it does warm somewhat once the creature makes itself known. It's hard not to appreciate someone who risks his life alongside you.
