Summary
Olruggio knew, long before it all came crashing down, that he’d made a terrible decision. That the consequences would catch up to him, and there’d be no avoiding a series of potentially world-ending conversations.
He just hadn’t expected it to happen quite so spectacularly.
The initial idea, prompted by a suggestion from an older noblewoman who’d commissioned him for something completely different, wasn’t bad at all. He’d been working on a set of singing stones, and the lady had made an offhanded comment about the potential of magic that could make an object resonate. She’d meant it as a joke, but where she saw humor, Olruggio saw potential—and told her as much.
And just like that, he’d had a commission. And a problem.

There’s a ghost in Zapolyarny Palace.
It lingers at every corner, past darkness, past shadow. A seat left alone, a throne with no owner. Rooms emptied, wardrobes forgotten, journals misplaced. Childe feels it most keenly as he lies with his back against the snow of the training grounds outside, the blood that seeps from his nose darkening it from white to glistening shades of red.
He feels the ghost mocking him, in a voice tinged with sarcasm and sadness. He feels it for only a moment, he remembers for only a moment longer, and then it’s lost. With the shifting of the winds, he forgets, and he does not remember again. But his heart stills, and his heart - like the ghost - lingers.
Or: wherein Ajax forgets, and Scaramouche can't stop remembering.
