In the trees, a thousand species of insects nest, rattling and shrieking shrill. Lizards and quick-feathered birds dart among the leaves as they hunt each other for meat. The Force is cacophonous, full to bursting with life. She can’t even hear the emptiness beyond it.
Kenobi won’t sense her through the noise. Not until it is too late.
Ventress hunts Kenobi among the shadows. The stars above are distant and grieving.

Over the course of the winter, the would-be leader of the Hawk Kin pack, Jim, and the heiress of Blake Keep, Kate, find themselves repeatedly running into each other, building an unexpected relationship, and eventually developing feelings.
It’s a shame that it will never work between them, since Kate is already entertaining a courtship with another man, while the force that had tormented both the Hawk Kins and Kate’s own people draws ever nearer on a warpath to destroy all amcaira.

Bob falters, mouth bobbing around soundless words, suddenly unsure. He squints at her gray sweater, as if he could make out the object out by sheer will alone. “... Are you?”
“Yes, of course, Bob– what do you take me for? Look, see?” Yelena points to her chest, urging him to lean closer for a better look. “Right here, this spot right here, that little dark bit you see that blends with the light and the dark, that is the—”
Her hands shoot out without warning, shoving a screaming Bob off the ledge.
Or: Yelena helps Bob face his fear of heights, among other things.
