Summary
1840: A freshly ordained priest sets out to lead his first congregation in a secluded village in the mountains. Kurapika has begged the bishop to be sent there, to penetrate the secret of the previous priest’s disappearance. Yet upon his arrival, he finds the small village in a far more wretched state than anticipated – the church desecrated and the landlord’ mansion in ruins. He now finds himself confronted with the reality of a flock of terrified non-believers and their ghastly visions – flying demons that steal the warmth from your blood, shrieks echoing in the wee hours of the morning.
During his investigation to exorcise this evil along with the ghosts of his own past, he finds a journal tucked away in the sacristy. It tells the story of the landlord’s oldest son – a young man by the name of Illumi and his encounter with the priest Kurapika has come to replace. The more he reads, the more he becomes convinced that this priest is not a holy man but a spawn of hell that drove Illumi together with the whole village down an ensanguined path of death and desire. “You know, I never ask humans how they feel afterwards, but it’s not like they could answer,” says Mahito, laughing again. Junpei is in too much pain to respond, but Mahito pulls him up to rest his head on his shoulder.
“You’re different though, Junpei,” Mahito whispers, breath tickling his temple. “You’re incredible.”

Briskly shoving the person in front of him aside, he strode forward and grabbed the hunter by the back of his coat, violently turning him around and shouting in his face.«What the hell are you doing!?»
For just a second, the man seemed nonplussed. His grey eyes widened but a fraction, but he otherwise remained unbothered by the turn of events.
«I'm defending myself.»
«He wouldn't have been able to harm you in any way! Aren't you a hunter of beasts? Don't you have any pride? Retract your weapon!»
«He attacked me first. He should have known he had nothing to gain from it, and I retaliated accordingly.»
«Are you a child!? You didn't have to react this way!»
«The only one who's acting like a child here is you. Can't we have a civil discussion like two normal people?»The stranger fully smiled down at him, and Kurapika saw red.

Summary
Kurapika lost his family at an early age due to a massive gang war. Nevertheless, after that he was taken by the Phantom Troupe, an illegal mafia gang, and transported to another town. He was raised and trained by them in order to become a member of it. He hated being among the people who killed his entire family but he had to deal with it somehow. Kurapika promised himself to avenge his family one day. The moment had finally come but he wasn't ready for what he'd have to go through.

Their fingers intertwine. “How does it feel to be a puppet on my string?”

Having dedicated the six years after his House's death to reclaiming the Scarlet Eyes and laying them to rest, Kurapika must combat his lust for revenge and survivor's guilt in order to retrieve two more pairs of Eyes while accompanying the man who helped pluck them out of his brethren.
