Summary
Modern cultivator, Wei Wuxian, dies in a train crash and is sent back in time to the period of Ancient China he had been writing his thesis on - transmigrated into his own body as a child, dying on the streets of Yiling. He has no money, no family, but a knowledge of modern cultivation and of the historical events that are about to unfold.
He recalls the recently-unearthed journal of a woman who was imprisoned in Cloud Recesses against her will, and decides that she’s a good place to start to find someone who might be willing to help him dismantle the corruption that had sent the Cultivation World into the Dark Ages so long ago.
Of course, he had no idea that the person he sought would be the mother of Hanguang-Jun, the object of Wei Wuxian's fascination (“obsession,” his friend had corrected), since he had first learned of his existence in the ancient texts he'd studied.

"A useless Beta like you shouldn't have the right to fight an Alpha!" he snapped.
Wei Wuxian wore a mischievous expression. "Does it bother you to be defeated by a Beta? Well, just imagine how much worse it would be if I were an Omega."

Jin Guanyao is in the Unclean Realm again, playing for Nie Mingjue. It should have been just like any other day but Nie Mingjue had been particularly cutting so Jin Guangyao gave the music a little extra push. After all, it would only make him a little sicker. In the grand scheme of things, it wouldn't really make a difference. Turns out, he was wrong about that.
Lan Xichen has had a brilliant idea on how to help both Nie Mingjue and Lan Wangji and he couldn't wait to share his plan. He has arrived unexpectedly in the Unclean Realm and Nie Huaisang is taking him to Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue. He hears the music. The words didn’t tremble. They landed like stone. Xie Lian didn’t move.
“Some of them deserved it,” Hua Cheng added. “Some didn’t. I stopped asking.”
Xie Lian’s eyes stayed on the wall across from them.
“Did it help?” He asked.
“No,” Hua Cheng said. “But it made everything quiet.”
Another silence. Longer this time. Hua Cheng’s voice softened.
“I drank too much. Gambled sometimes. Took jobs just to bleed. I let people use me, and I used them back. I didn’t let anyone stay.”
His voice dropped lower.
“I fucked a lot of people.”
Still, Xie Lian didn’t move. But his breathing slowed.
Hua Cheng’s fingers had stopped stroking. Now they just rested against the curve of Xie Lian’s neck, reverent. Waiting.
Xie Lian exhaled. It wasn’t pain he felt. Not jealousy. Not bitterness.
It was grief.
The grief of having been mourned from afar by the person who left you.

Or: People are always so fast to assume Hua Cheng must’ve cursed Xie Lian for the latter to fall for a Ghost King, so what happens when the two are actually cursed to be in love? It changes absolutely nothing and everything at the same time. Stay tuned for the usual amount of shameless flirting between Hualian while Feng Xin and Mu Qing are not so quietly suffering in the background as they have to watch that.
