“Oh come on.” Jinx groaned as a car slowed down to roll alongside her. Great, fantastic, some creep wanted to make her night even worse. That's just wonderful.
When the driver didn’t take the hint when Jinx kept her gaze forward and never slowed in her stride she finally stopped. She stomped petulantly and swiveled around to glare right at the stupid tinted glass of the stupid car.
“Whaddaya want, asshole?” Jinx spat as the window started to lower, preparing for whatever sleaze would be leering behind it.
So she was surprised to not only recognize the driver but recognize them as Caitlyn fucking Kiramman.

Summary
The first shiver curled up her spine like fire, crawling through her muscles and making her knees buckle. Her lungs burned with every ragged breath, and a pressure rose behind her eyes so intense it felt like they might shatter. Bones creaked and shifted unnaturally. Her fingers were stretched into sharp claws, her ribs bent unnaturally and every tendon screamed in protest. Rumi collapsed onto the floor, her teeth gnashing as fur erupted along her arms and spine, prickling, itching, spreading in angry, hot waves.
Faintly she registers that she is lying in some back alley, and not confined in the safety of the basement like usual. No chains to hold her down, no steel door to prevent her rampage. In the millennial year of our lord--John the Dragonslayer, the undying monarch of Tier and High King of the Nine Forsworn Realms--eight knights converge upon Canaan Castle to represent their respective kingdoms in a tournament. Those who prove themselves worthy shall join the (diminished) ranks of the ageless Dragonslayer Knights. With them, their lieges shall ascend to the High King's court, where they shall have His Majesty's ear for all eternity. Or at least for as long as their knights survive.
Sir Gideon of Drearburh was raised to be a footsoldier, not a knight. She is, however, the closest thing to a knight that the Kingdom of Hadea can muster. Her liege, Princess Harrowhark, wishes to join the High King's court that she might seek aide for her people in their ongoing famine. Sir Gideon never wants to return to Hadea again. If Gideon places well in the games, both their needs shall be served. Unfortunately Sir Gideon can barely ride a horse.
Sir Naberius of Ida, in contrast, is a veteran of the tournament circuit. He is certain to place highly. Or, at least *he* thinks so. And he is quite happy to be forever 23.
Both Gideon and Naberius ought to know by now that magic always comes at a price.
