People had been gawking at him, smirking as if they knew something private about him, and whispering to each other. It hadn’t felt malicious per se, more like one of those dreams where you suddenly find yourself outside in public without your clothes on. Now, with the reason for that sensation displayed before him in all of its questionable glory, Geralt has to give it to his gut for the exceedingly apt comparison.

Eskel had one true love in his long life, an auburn-haired boy who died screaming during experimental witcher trials. Geralt, on the other hand, had many true loves, a great many for a man who was supposed to be more cut off from his emotions than even the average witcher. Perhaps that should have been Eskel’s clue that he didn’t understand this love thing at all.
In which Eskel learns what love looks like from Geralt, of all people. And Geralt learns that a damaged heart can still love and be loved in return.
