Despite his passion for love-ballads and romance novels, Wei Wuxian never expected that he might be married one day. As the common-born ward of a merchant, he lacked the standing to find a wife among the gentry; and though he had liked the idea of a love match—where neither his rank nor that of his wife would matter very much, as long as Wei Wuxian could provide a comfortable home for them—no would-be beloved had ever materialized.
It was thus that he came to be unwed at the age of twenty-four, when one of his uncle’s old friends from court wrote to Lotus Pier to ask if Jiang Fengmian would be in favor of a ruzhui marriage with Wei Wuxian as the bridegroom.

“So what are you going to do about it, Xichen?” Jin Guangyao heard Nie Mingjue demanding, and paused, tilting his head to the side to listen rather than proceeding to enter the room.
Nie Mingjue had gotten increasingly irascible as of late, no doubt in large part to the growing influence of the Song of Turmoil that he’d been playing for him, and much of his ire was (correctly, although unknowingly) aimed at Jin Guangyao. It therefore would be better to stay outside and listen, to figure out what argument Nie Mingjue was using and design appropriate countermeasures – to convince Lan Xichen that Nie Mingjue was, as usual, making a fuss when there was no reason, and that it was safe to simply ignore him or downplay his concerns.
“Da-ge…”
“Don’t da-ge me! He’s killing people!”

He didn’t know what spell or talisman or array Nie Huaisang was using to speak with him no matter how many sound-blocking talismans Lan Xichen put up to block against him.
He didn’t know when he might come, and he didn’t know how to stop him from coming.

In the end, it had been the Yiling Patriarch’s stratagems and his fierce fighting which had turned the tide of the war. He had killed both Wen Ruohan’s sons, and floored the traitor so that Meng Yao could strike the final blow. His status as the strongest warrior on the field had been undeniable.
Thus, the offer extended to him by the Lan court. Take his place as the Emperor’s consort, the only one permitted to lay hands upon the Emperor, the only one to share his bed with him while he sleeps, unaware and vulnerable. His last, best line of defense.
Or: Forced by his court to accept a consort, Lan Wangji is certain he has seen enough of the so-called Yiling Patriarch to know what he's getting: an uncouth ruffian. Slowly, he begins to realise that even an emperor's assumptions can be misplaced.
