Summary
He wasn’t sure when he’d decided that what he needed more than anything was a companion. Someone to talk to. Even if that someone was something he’d created. And to that end, he’d been working tirelessly on an AI companion, carefully programmed to his specifications, built to understand him.
Sometimes, he truly rued the day he’d decided to give this thing a personality, but what good was a companion without one?
And so, AI-STAR-10N - or Astarion, as he’d decided to call him - was supposed to be his companion. It had been slow going; he’d carefully fed it bits of information over the last ten months, building up its memory of the world. History, science, philosophy - he’d left no stone unturned, trying to make sure his companion - his friend - would be worthy of conversing with.
Or : Gale flies too close to the sun.

Even if he can't change the whole legal system, he can at least help one unlucky person at a time. Definitely. Probably. Maybe. He hopes so anyway. And he'll start with the one who has been at the centre for the longest time and needs him the most.

The longest seasonal job Astarion has held since his release has been, of all places, at the godsdamned baseball stadium. Selling hot dogs. And of all the jobs, it's of course the job that's made him gain the most weight and get the most sunburnt.
Thank the gods there's at least one customer who always purchases, and he even tips well.

Summary
Gale had desperately clasped Astarion's wrist, preventing him from fully wrenching away. From fleeing. And for a brief moment Astarion was ready to lash out with all of the feral fury a starving spawn had to offer.
The memory of that scorching touch was like a scar. The imprint of his lightly calloused, bare palm on Astarion's slender wrist was an invisible, white-hot brand upon his flesh. It was only Gale's wide, worried eyes and immediate surrender of Astarion's captured limb that saved him from being torn to ribbons by long-forgotten vampiric claws.
He loathed it. Touching and being touched.
People did not touch Astarion and survive.
Astarion did not touch people destined to live.
---
Astarion has a complicated relationship with physical touch. It brings up a wellspring of memories best left forgotten, and he doesn't even know if he could enjoy it anymore should he ever let anyone close enough to try... or five times Astarion sees Gale being held and has a lot of difficult feelings about it + the one time he does it himself and knows exactly how he feels about it.

“Astarion assumes Gale will leave him behind after he takes the crown of Karsis” — he doesn’t assume wrong.

It’s a vampire who, while not an acolyte, is one of the most devoted worshippers of ambition in all the realms.
He can’t help but answer his call.

Gatorland is directly on Highway 441, just north of the Orlando-Kissimmee line, 20 minutes from Walt Disney World and Sea World. Astarion’s there for information, not necessarily connections, but he’d also been told to stay open-minded. Specifically, Cazador had told him to keep an eye out for anyone whose scruples are few.
OR,
Forget it, Jake. It's Gatorland.

“Boo!”
Gale flung back in his seat, heart shooting up to his throat and he nearly flipped back out of his chair.
Astarion’s floating head cackled from the window, soon becoming his shoulders and arms, and then the rest of him as he climbed into the room. “You should have seen the look on your face—”
“You know I hate it when you do that.” Gale fought to keep his voice even, gulping down the sudden dryness in his mouth.
“And yet you always leave your window open.”

Please don't let "Juggalo AU" scare you off. This is a sweet story about stepping out of your comfort zone. Of letting go and indulging in the hedonistic pleasures of the world with someone you can't help but fall in love with. Magic at the Gathering is shotgun romance at its Faygo-drenched finest.
