Summary
Six months ago, Shane’s intimate conversation and break-up with Rose Landry was recorded and leaked. In those six months, his life had completely upended and everything had changed, for better or for worse. Except for Ilya. He still has Ilya, and he’s beginning to understand that he always will.
It’s 2018. Shane Hollander has to figure out his new life, in a new city, on a new team, while being out to the world but not by his own choice. Ilya, along for the ride, also has to learn what it means to be connected to a place, to a person, and to his own inner truth.

ANOTHER ONE THANK YOU! i loved this fic so much! i like how the relationship w shane and the bears grew overtime and shane finally felt comfortable enough to trust them and come out to ilya w them. #ally lmao and another thing i loved loved loved was how the author touched on the difference between scott/kip and shane/ilya. i was having a debate about this w my coworker (lol) but shane and ilya have way more to lose than scott and kip. ofc scott coming out is a big deal but kip was alr out and they’re both white americans. they have the privilege of being white even though they’re both gay. shane and ilya on the other hand are way different — in this story shane was outed and p much discarded by the team that drafted him after already struggling w his sexuality to begin w…he’s also asian so he’s a double minority at that so it makes it twice as harder. and ilya is literally frm a homophobic country w laws against LGBTQIA+ so he could literally be thrown in jail for being out. i just love when authors are able to touch on this topic and make it seen because i feel like it’s not talked about enough. shane and ilya have way more at stake. so fuck u to my coworker 🖕🏾 lol but nevertheless this was a great read. i love this author and i will continue to to be obsessed w hollanov for many months to come

Summary
Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”
+++
Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?

that was so. fucking. good. i love how shane knows russian because it really does exemplify how much more expressive ilya is in his native tongue when he’s speaking to someone who understands him. it put me back to the scene in episode 5 when ilya is on the phone w shane and he’s like “i don’t know. english is too hard right now.” and shane asks him to speak in russian so he can properly explain his feelings. i think i kind of didn’t realize how difficult it can be for some people when english isn’t their first language and they’re surrounded by people who only speak english so they have to adapt just to hold a conversation w them. i nvr thought of it like that and i like how easy it is for shane and ilya to communicate because shane knows russian. i also really liked how this fic talked about micro aggressions and actually calling it out because thats exactly what it is. from what i’ve heard in the books RR doesn’t have shane express how he feels about being the only asian player on this team surrounded by white people all the time and we knw that as a minority he’s def facing microagressions. i like how they addressed it a bit on the show and reading about it in a fic is refreshing as well. i also LOVED the scene when they’re at a club and shane calls out ilya for being microaggressive as well (unknowingly) because he’s trying to have shane perform in front of his teammates. i loved when shane said “it’s not the same for me — being asian — and not knowing perfect english.” SO FUCKING GOOD. because yeah even though ilya’s english isn’t perfect and he has a thick accent it’s seen as attractive and hot because he’s white. it would be the total opposite for shane. it would make him seem “unintelligent” because he’s asian. but yeah i just went on a tangent. i guess that shows how much i loved reading this lol. def on my top 5

Summary
Shane’s heart drops into his stomach. “Ilya,” he breathes. His vision goes blurry, throat tight. He tries to swallow it down and focus, shove his swirling thoughts into a neat little box, but it’s impossible. He feels—he might throw up, actually. “Are you seriously telling me you tried to fucking kill yourself?”
“Yes,” Ilya agrees blandly, “It did not work.”
Ilya calls Shane from the hospital. Shane handles it very normally.

this was a fucking gut punch because what the fuck. it was beautifully written and i actually cried while reading this. shane saying “did you really try to kill yourself?” and ilya replying “yes but it did not work.” is so him that it’s actually so sad. one thing that i kind of relate to w ilya is self deprecating jokes to hide pain and trauma and fuckkkkkk this was one of those moments (not suicidal btw and nvr have been) but the way this was written was just so visual for me. i could actually see hudson and connor as ilya and shane acting out this scene. and another thing that broke my heart was that ilya thought shane still just wanted to fuck after his suicide attempt and shane was like wtf is wrong w you?! i’m trying to check on you and ilya was surprised at the thought of shane caring about him outside of sex 💔💔💔💔 my poor baby

Summary
“Because I can’t fucking do this, Ilya. I’m going to my parents’, I- I need a break, alright? Shit.” Shane’s gaze locked onto his keys and he picked them up, stalking towards the door. He needed a break from the arguing and he needed to go somewhere he could breathe and collect his thoughts, so he could process this correctly and talk about it with Ilya civilly. Everything was still suffocating and overwhelming and Shane needed out, needed to go sit in his car and drive in silence to his parents’ place.
-
Ilya had seen enough breakups to know what one looked like. Shane ignored him, and looked irritated, and said he couldn’t do this (this, like everything between them could be reduced to a single word other than love), and said he needed a break (his confidence in Ilya’s English was comforting up until Ilya realised it meant Shane didn’t feel the need to say the dramatic I’m breaking up with you that characterised the ends of relationships).or, hollanov fight and misunderstandings resulting in an injury ensue
