Summary
The first time they hooked up, Rozanov had kissed him before Shane got on his knees. They kissed with Scott Hunter in the room next-door. And they kissed slowly and sweetly, on his apartment stairway, after Rozanov had taken his world apart and put him back together again. Hell, even in that bathroom, where he felt as if the Russian was trampling on his bared soul, Rozanov had kissed him.
So why was it different this time? He must have done something wrong. He rakes his fingers through his hair, pulling hard at it.
Was he not good enough? What did he do wrong?
Shane aches with how much he wants—needs the other man. He clings to every single interaction, every touch, every word, every glance, everything Rozanov is willing to give him. He knows they cannot be anything, like Rozanov told him in Sochi. They cannot be anything other than this arrangement. Still, there is a hollow numbness in his chest everytime he thinks about those golden curls and ocean eyes, and it doesn't go away, doesn't subside unless he is with Rozanov, and he hates himself for wishing he could have more.
Or: Shane spirals and avoids Ilya post-Vegas. Ilya chases after him, and they talk.

Shane rubs his forehead. He gets to his feet and glances at his bag, still packed, on the hotel dresser.
“I hate your car,” he says, at last.
“Yes, I know,” Ilya says. It sounds like he’s smiling.

Jane: We didn't even kiss.
The words stare back at him. They fucking taunt him, the same way Ilya does with that wink of his, with his smirk and his deep voice.
Abruptly, Shane feels pissed off and a little like he’s grasping for something that’s slipping away. He feels the way he did in that bathroom, the first time he had Ilya’s attention for months and didn’t want to let Ilya escape without stealing more of it.
The elevator door opens. Shane does not get off.
Instead, he presses the button for Penthouse 1 and hits send on We didn’t even kiss.
He watches the floor numbers increase as the elevator carries him back to Ilya. Shane has no idea what he’s going to say to the asshole but he knows he has so many words that are about to burst out of his mouth.
Fuck you being the first two.
OR Shane goes back for that kiss.

So when he typed out on his phone “we didn’t even kiss” with tears rolling down his cheeks, he just wanted to type it. He just wanted to feel it— to feel the pain he had inside of him. That maybe typing it would help let it out, he would type it and the feeling would go away.
And the stupid fucking elevator still wasn’t here, and he was forced to sit there and wallow in his sadness. He should’ve thought this through, his hands were still shaking and as he went to delete the text. His clumsy thumb accidentally hit the send button.
“Oh fuck.” That snapped Shane out of everything.

The afternoon sun on his pale Irish skin is not going to go down well if he didn't get back in the car soon but he liked doing it this way, sitting against the hood of his car, arms crossed, waiting in the lot of Boyd's garage to pick Adam up from work. He liked to see the flash of a smile that crossed Adam's face when he exited the garage and caught sight of Ronan around the corner of the building, waiting for him, that flash of a smile he would try to hide but never quite managed to, that lightning flash of a smile that showed up even though he knew Ronan would be there that never failed to rocket straight down Ronan's spine and set him alight. It's fucking adorable. Ronan couldn't get enough of it, which is why he scowled deeply when Boyd was the one who walked around the side of the building and toward him then.
"Face the car, kid," Boyd said, "We need to talk and I don't want any lookie-loos. I only gotta couple minutes before Adam's done inside."
(Or, that time Adam faces his past head-on and Ronan says three very special words.)
