“So… how did you know you liked boys?” Mike randomly asks Will one afternoon.
“How did I what?” Will swivels his head toward Mike, who’s looking back at him expectantly over the top of his comic book. He’s got on that thinking-face he does— the one that tells Will that Mike has definitely been staring at him for the past ten minutes minimum, trying to wrap his brain around some idea or another, like he’s working out a particularly difficult puzzle.
“Like, what do you like about them? Oh, come on, don’t look at me like that,” he complains, and Will assumes he must be making a face somewhere between skeptical and bewildered. “We never talk about it. Why is it boys for you?”

He's barely heard from Mike for four months, but when he comes back to Hawkins for winter break and Mike randomly confesses his love, Will has to make a difficult decision.

Buck hides his smile against his shoulder, rolling his head to look up at the sky. The stars are a bit more visible tonight. He has to squint, and he’s not entirely sure what he’s looking at, but it’s nice—knowing that he and Eddie are looking up at the same sky. He can almost pretend they’re here together, sitting side by side in the camp chairs, miles of space, but still needing to press their knees into each other.
“I want to talk to you too.” Buck replies, equally as softly.

In 1938, there's a bar in Brooklyn called Sully’s where people are safe to be themselves. Behind the bar, a girl pours drinks. She's always got a big smile for Steve and she says queer like it's a good thing. On a regular basis, she takes his shoulders in her hands and tries to shake sense into him, saying, "When will you do something about that best friend of yours?"
In 2012, Bucky’s gone, but Steve’s not, and the girl’s hands are too old to shake him. She does her best to make him see sense anyway.
Steve had people who loved him before the war, and it turns out a few of them are still around when he finally comes home.

Summary
When Bucky was thawed after his cryogenic stint in Wakanda, his mind was recalibrated to ensure he was no longer a danger to himself or those he cared about: the Winter Soldier was gone. However, the actions that Hydra forced James Barnes’ body to perform were forever locked in the man’s mind, haunting him via tainted memories.
These memories were often triggered by the most mundane things - a friendly embrace, a colloquial phrase, or an everyday object. Typically, upon recall of these memories scattered with glitches, Bucky would succumb to disheartening confusion. It was soon discovered that these memories had been tampered with, one of the numerous unfortunate repercussions of Hydra’s electroshock therapy. This not only caused lapses in his memory, but caused inaccuracies. Inaccuracies that Steve took upon himself to help Bucky remedy.
