    “Maomao?” He presses, fingers closing over hers and lowering their joined hands to her lap, and she blinks in surprise at the use of her name. “What is it? What’s wrong?”

    “Their technique is sloppy,” she answers honestly. “I feel strain on my heart. They should have targeted the nervous system instead.”

    Master Jinshi stares at her like she’s spoken a foreign language he can’t even begin to try and understand. She tries to explain.

    “Certain snake venoms cause coagulation of the blood, which could have been effective and made the blood unable to move through my veins, but if the end result is simply making my heart stop beating by targeting the muscles involv-”

    “Maomao,” Master Jinshi says, very calmly, “I need you to stop speaking now.”

    (an assassin tries to kill jinshi with a poisoned blade that gets maomao instead) (she is obviously much less concerned about this than everyone else)

    Maomao was rather sick of Jinshi's sudden refusal to touch her, especially after his treating her like a sack of rice earlier in the day, in his attempts to touch her as little as possible least he be tempted.

    Thus Maomao planed to do exactly that. Tempt him.

    She knew too many tricks to simply let him think their options were all or nothing, after all. Maybe being tricked into the same carriage had some benefits.
