Summary
According to the team, Andrew is currently losing a custody battle for Neil against a sport invented by the mafia.
It’s a running joke in the locker room: Neil cares about Exy, and then, distant second, he cares about breathing. Andrew is somewhere on the list, probably below the new backliner spread Kevin found.
Andrew doesn't bother correcting them. He knows the difference between a distraction and a destination. He knows Neil runs until his lungs burn to keep the ghosts quiet, but he also knows exactly whose bed Neil crawls into when the adrenaline fades.
(Or: 5 times the team thought Neil loved the sport more than the goalkeeper, and one time Neil made the hierarchy terrifyingly clear.)

Summary
Neil Josten was dead.
Andrew hadn’t had the chance—and hadn’t cared enough—to see his body. All he knew was that one moment, that creature had been beside him, saying thank you, and the next, he had vanished forever, the way good things always tended to do sooner or later.
The Foxes hadn’t handled it well. The media nearly exploded for days, weeks. The game against the Ravens? A disaster. Without Neil—the key that held together all those people with little in common—nothing made sense.
Andrew should have been used to that feeling by now: the emptiness, the apathy, the silence.
And yet, life seemed louder than ever, his mind collapsing under thoughts that had never been there before.A lifetime passes: long, dragging, leading nowhere.
And when Andrew finally closes his eyes—he goes back.2006/04
Neil Josten was right in front of him: face twisted, pale, lips parted in search of breath, hands clutching his stomach so tightly it looked like he might squeeze himself apart. Alive. And exactly as he had been the day they met.
OR
Neil Josten dies in Baltimore, and Andrew gets a second chance to save them. Minyard isn’t willing to lose him again.

Bookmarker's Notes
[iron-bite of snow, tang of nostalgia, canyons of grief, fathom of loss]
“All it said was that you had once been here. That you could read the sky. That you could hear the silence inside the snow. And that even though I never fully understood you, I remembered you - the way snow remembers footprints.”
“An unfinished draft. A nameless poem. The lines ended abruptly - like a hand pulling the brake too hard.”

Summary
Neil continues, deadpan. He tilts the brush side to side, balancing it on the tip of his index finger, weighing it. “Good weight distribution. Aerodynamic.” He taps the handle against the mic. Thock. “Durable.”
Kevin’s mouth twitches. He clamps it down, hard.
Neil leans in, conspiratorial, voice dropping even lower. “Truly… the most balanced brush I’ve ever encountered.”
That does it. Kevin cracks - an honest, startled laugh that he tries to smother behind his fist. It’s short, sharp, but real.

More famous shit. They’re doing an ASMR interview.Firm believer Kevin only gets silly when he’s with Neil.

Summary
Jean is something of a light sleeper. It is for this reason that, thankfully, he manages to get to his phone before its ringing wakes the entire house and becomes an ordeal.
“What happened?” His hands are shaking. In the Nest, it never would have been so easy to throw him off. California is making him weak.
There’s a low gasp on the other end.
“Kevin?” Jean hisses. “What happened?” He presses a hand hard against his chest and feels the quick thrum.
There’s another hitch in Kevin’s breathing. “Jean,” is all he says.
__
When Kevin has a nightmare and wakes to an empty dorm, there's only one person he can call. Jean isn't nearly as annoyed about it as he wants to be.

Summary
Jean is quiet for a moment, and Jeremy assumes that’s the end of the conversation until he adds, “I have never” —voice catching, he clears his throat and coughs a few times into the pillow he’d brought over— “never gotten in another man’s bed by choice before.”
The bare admission takes Jeremy’s breath away; he’s known the truth about what happened at the Nest for a while now, but Jean never brings it up and Jeremy sure as heck isn’t going to ask about it again. He lets Jean’s words settle between them, grateful that they’re not facing each other. He weighs his own words, all of the possible responses, and finds them lacking.
“You always have a choice,” he says, “with me. With us—the team, I mean.”
Jean hadn’t had a choice in coming to USC, but Jeremy would make sure that he had a say in everything that happened to him here.
“I know.” Jean coughs again, and there’s another long pause after. “You’re a good man.”
It takes all Jeremy has not to roll over, to look Jean in the eyes as he speaks; instead, he says to the wall, “You are, too.”
---
Jean doesn't feel well; Jeremy's bed is warm and safe.

Summary
Neil was at a bus station, sprawled on the benches and staring at the ceiling, zoning out to the poorly tuned radio station and ignoring his throbbing body, battered and bruised, when he heard a voice inside him say I don’t like this song.
Neil closed his eyes. “You don’t like anything,” he replied, but Andrew didn’t think Neil was real, so he never stuck around when Neil talked back.

Summary
It doesn’t surprise Andrew that Neil falls asleep no two minutes after that. He had been up all night, ignoring the medicine because it tasted “too sweet” and not laying down in Andrew’s or his own bed to avoid waking anyone up with his coughing.
Andrew looks down at him, face gone soft with his lips parted slightly and eyes hidden beneath his lids, thinks about how soft the man that called a mobster out on live television looks and feels like someone opened his chest and placed the sun inside of it.
(or, five times neil falls asleep on andrew and one time he doesn't)
