And Ponyboy had sat, expecting to be handed back an annotated copy, one with so many notes about his run-on sentences.
And instead, he got handed a pamphlet. A few, actually.
“What are these?” he had said.
“Mr. Curtis,” Mr. Syme’s voice was light and casual sounding. “I was wondering if you have been doing any thinking about applying to colleges.”
“No.” Ponyboy didn’t have to think about it.

Darry just shrugged. “Don’t worry ‘bout it. Told Bill my kid was sick and he let me off with no fuss.”
Pony blinked at him.
And maybe Darry hadn’t meant to say that – my kid. Maybe he had. Either way, it settled over Pony like a warm blanket.
He didn’t say anything else.

But, things never did seem to work out the way Ponyboy wanted them to.
In which a field trip goes horribly wrong, and Ponyboy goes home a lot more traumatized and a lot less human than he was when he left. Chaos ensues.

“Ponyboy, I ain’t gonna sugarcoat it,” Darry started, “You’re a good kid. Hell, Soda’s already halfway to callin’ you his twin. But when I first said yes to takin’ you in, it was ‘cause the state was breathin’ down my neck about Soda.”
Pony looked down at the table. He felt the sting of rejection before the rest even came.
“They said if I couldn’t prove I could handle everything, they’d ship him off to a boys home till he aged out.” Darry explained, voice quiet now. “Having a foster kid is part of me provin’ I could step up.”

Ponyboy has been shuffled through the foster system long enough to know that nothing good lasts. When he gets placed with Darry and Sodapop Curtis, he’s ready to keep his head down and not get in the way. But staying out of trouble gets a lot harder when the people around you start to feel like family. Especially when one mistake could mean tearing that family apart.

Johnny gets the nerve to sit and stand on shaking legs. Pony’s legs dangle from the side of the fountain, unmoving and still, his converse just brushing the concrete. There is coldness that envelops Johnny’s heart and soul, and he feels his eyes go wide and white.
“What did you do to him?” Johnny asks in a tough, but shaking voice. “What did you do?”
Bob looks at him. He looks at the other Socs. He looks back at Johnny. “He had it coming.”
Johnny feels sick and cold inside. “No, no, you-- he’s fourteen. He’s fourteen!”
The other Socs don’t even stay long enough to hear Bob’s commands do Johnny in, too. They just tear Bob away with blank, pale faces. Bob laughs in a sick, twisted way. Johnny vomits up popcorn and Pepsi and forces his legs to move forward.~

'You don't get it!' Steve stepped forward so that he was towering over him. Ponyboy did his best to seem as defiant as possible, meeting his wild gaze. "Three months, Ponyboy. You have been gone three months, and you, what, show up now? Glory, you always have shitty timing, ya know that? Coulda returned at any time, and you chose tonight of all things.'"

It's been four years since he went missing from the scene of the railroad track. The case has been cold for just as long, and nearly everyone in Tulsa has lost hope of seeing the baby Curtis brother's face again.
His gang has never lost faith, though, and it proves its worth on the Friday afternoon that Ponyboy Curtis, in all his presumed-dead glory, knocks on the front door like he's not allowed to simply walk in.
