Summary
“ — leave me a message, and I’ll probably listen to it at some point. ‘Kay!”
There’s a moment of silence before the beep, and Stede wishes he could stretch it out. He loves Ed so much. So much. It’s just barely dark outside. Ed must be making dinner. Stede asked for pasta, earlier. Distantly, he wonders if the water’s boiling.
Something clarifies in Stede’s mind, slotting into place. He’d hate to ruin Ed’s meal. As the phone sharply beeps, Stede presses down harder on his stomach.
“Ed, darling,” He starts. He wants to cry. He thinks he might already be. Ed’s the darlingest man who has ever set foot on this earth. “I don’t think I’m going to be home— hmm.” His stomach hurts. “I don’t. I don’t think I’m going to be home in time for supper. I’m sorry. I just might be a little bit late. Sorry. I love you, Ed."

“Ed, darling. I don’t think I’m going to be home— hmm. I don’t. I don’t think I’m going to be home in time for supper. I’m sorry. I just might be a little bit late—”
Ed saves the message. He wipes his eyes with the hand he holds his phone with, not wanting to let Mummy see him cry.
“See? He’s perfectly fine," he tells her. She looks up at him with eyes like galaxies. "Just you and me for dinner tonight, though.”
Mummy meows.

Summary
When Jim started off at Queen Anne’s Racks, their expectations of the place were not high whatsoever.
They never expected the QAR to give them so much structure in life— their best friends, their partners, a community in kind with their coworkers. Besides all of the actual work they had to do (boo!) Jim was grateful for it all. It was a wonky sort of perfect.
There was one part, though, not quite reaching perfection.
(Or: Jim was good at their job. Just not around Archie.)

Summary
Ed thinks of a thousand more reasons they should turn around and go home. Heatstroke. Bears. Food poisoning. Grizzly bears.
Just as he’s about to spew a few made up statistics about hibernation and ruthless mauling, Stede runs away from him. A stall where crystals glimmer in the sunshine has caught his attention. Ed watches Stede grab a big, spikey red one. It fills the entire space of his palm. Bingo.

Summary
It’s the way he sleeps.
Sprawled. Brutal. Uncaring. He snores up a storm; humming and hawing and snorting throughout the night. The sound is decibels too loud. It’s ungraceful, and crass, and if Stede knew he did it he’d be blubbering and beet-red in seconds.
Ed thinks it’s nice.

Heat spreads quickly across Stede’s chest. Stark red blossom branching out, dripping out of him slowly, soundlessly. He romanticises it, in his head. It’s Shakespeare. Being saved and being solved. But it’s not; It’s blood, and guts, and gravel.

Summary
It’s probably two. Three, maybe. Ed watches the moon move like it’s an hourglass, just barely inching through the sky, one little baby grain of sand's length at a time. He thinks of what morning will bring; bitter coffee and a perch by the front door. Dirty carrots from the garden, sewing up his trousers he ripped yesterday, and waiting. Waiting. Waiting for a break. Waiting for solace. Waiting for everything to go back to normal.
Stede has been gone for a week.
Missing, actually, Ed corrects himself. Stede has been missing for a week.

“Hey, love, what’s wrong?” Stede asks, and the worries circulating Ed’s brain seem to pipe down, just a little.
“Mm, nothing. Fine.” Ed says. He is fine, technically, he knows everything is going to turn out okay. Always does. But god, sometimes his brain just doesn’t understand that.
“You’re not fine.” Stede says, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “Don’t even try that with me, Edward. You’re nervous?”
“Pshh, not really.” Ed responds. Super cool, Ed.
“Darling.”
“Yeah, maybe, a little, I dunno.”

He doesn't know, realises Ed. He doesn't know who I am. Amazing.

“Grand. I’m Stede.” The man says, and holds out his hand.
“Ed.” Ed says, and shakes it.
