Summary
Storm is the second novel in a trilogy of Brokeback Mountain-inspired novels. Earthquake is the first novel and is posted both on the Archive of Our Own and on my Live Journal: jenna_hilary.livejournal.com. Storm follows directly from the events of Earthquake, with only a few days between them. Readers should dive into Earthquake first before they pick up Storm.
I'll be posting the initial chapters of Storm weekly on Wednesdays. I expect the novel to be complete sometime around Christmas 2013.
The year is 1984. Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar have moved together to Eagle Nest, New Mexico. Jack has a job at a cattle feedlot, Ennis is foreman at a small horse ranch, and Ennis trains problem horses in the pasture behind their leased house. Here, in the twenty-first year of their tumultuous relationship, Jack and Ennis learn how to live together.

“A few weeks ago I would have thought you were impossible,” Sherlock begins, walking into the kitchen in his blue robe, and John – not quite catching on – wants to scoff and argue, No, actually, you are impossible, but then Sherlock continues: “But now I’d say you are improbable.”
John thinks this might be flattering, if he could wrap his head around it, but he can’t – Sherlock is standing near, steaming his sun-baked-clean-sand smell, like the beach after rain, an alive smell, an other smell. It’s intoxicating, and John has been studiously avoiding it, but he can’t shift away now it’s so near. Now Sherlock’s so near.
And then Sherlock ruins the probable-loveliness of his words and the definite-beauty of his presence by saying: “And by ‘improbable’ I mean ‘not yet scientifically acknowledged.’”

So this story is written by the same person who wrote “Unexpected Effects” (which, if you have not read it yet, 1) wow I envy you and 2) happy reading.) I shied away from ACD fic for a long time because I didn’t exactly ship them in ACD, and something about the idea of it made me deeply uncomfortable. THIS WAS IGNORANT PREJUDICE. ACD fic in the hands of a great author is a gift, and this fic exemplifies everything I love about what ACD fic can be. The love depicted here is so tender and moving and so deeply satisfying that I re-read it often, and it leaves me with the same happy, light feeling every time. The writing is incredibly good - even if you normally cringe at 2nd person, TRY IT, you are in capable hands.

Holy fuck. This fic. I used to turn my nose up at both tentacle fic and omegaverse and now, predictably, am obsessed with both genres. This fic effortlessly blends the two into something both wonderfully strange but grounded and, of course, brutally hot (to quote Cher). Terrific writing - seamless description of the (hot) weirdness taking place. If you wanted to dip your toe into either genre, this is a good jumping off point because it’s very short.

I cannot recommend this highly enough - it’s a sprawling epic covering twenty years of Sherlock and John’s life together, in a believable (and unbelievably heart wrenching) way. Holyfant is incredibly gifted with figurative language and uses it well - her writing (and the story she tells) will take your breath away. This should be on every classics list, READ IT NOW.
