It started with the death of the sun. He was laid to rest under a blanket of clouds, mourned under an overcast sky, and left as only a memory when the world was forced to move on. Only a hint of light through a cloudy sky reminded the world of what used to be.
Like a sunset and a new dawn, a new sun would rise. Only to be hidden away, lost in a realm of clouds and sunlight. Not many people would come to his realm. Years passed where he would busy himself, but he always yearned for something different, something new. Something had to be out there beyond the same old trees and the same old island. Day in and day out, he dreamt of what could be.
One day, two strangers came to the sun. They were boys barely older than himself. The two visitors were just as different as they were similar. One was cocky and cautious, the other friendly with a sharp smile, and, at heart, both were wild and curious. Often, the two bickered, and that was what drew the sun god's attention. He watched them quarrel from afar before his interest got the better of him and he approached.

He sat like that for a while, lost in thought, just appreciating the silence, until he felt a tap on his shoulder. He twisted around and looked up at the man standing there.
“Sorry to bother you. You wouldn’t have a lighter by any chance, would you?” the man said.
Zuko stood up, turning to face the man fully. He felt suddenly lightheaded from standing too abruptly and reached out to steady himself against the concrete beside him, managing to reach out a flame-tipped finger with his other hand.
“Thanks,” the man said, leaning in slightly to light the tip of his cigarette, eyes locked with Zuko’s the whole time.

Karkat managed somehow to tear his eyes away from the kitschiest sword stand ever and its glittery hopefully-fake diamonds and give the man a long, unamused, unimpressed stare.
He hoped it was unimpressed. Apartment, his ass, this was a fucking penthouse suite. There were highly polished wooden floors everyfuckingwhere and marble countertops with inlaid fake-gold patterns (dear lord he hoped fake) and a chimney with a flatscreen showing a badly pixelated fire and faced by a fur rug.
It was ridiculously gaudy. It was also ridiculously expensive.
Bring a lot of your whores back here, Hefner? Karkat didn't retort, because hey, he was standing right here, wasn't he.
