There’s a crinkling as Nancy unceremoniously crushes the newspaper in her lap, digging her elbows into the thin paper to get the correct angle to kiss Robin contentedly on the forehead. Robin freezes momentarily, hands midair and wavering from the momentum of her hastily halted gesticulating. She drops them and turns to stare–falsely offended–at the woman responsible for the interruption of her very important, very detailed plan for the rest of the evening.
“I thought you liked the sound of my voice, Nance,” she says, eyebrows raised.
“I do,” Nancy replies, tilting her face up to kiss Robin’s suddenly warming nose. “That’s why I’d rather be home with you, anyways.”
OR
Nancy and Robin get snowed in.

Or, Nancy Wheeler wasn't looking forward to spending Christmas back in Hawkins. The last thing she expected was to meet Robin, someone who, for reasons Nancy can't quite articulate, makes it nearly impossible to think and her heart to thump unevenly whenever she smiles.
The New Year can't come soon enough.

“Sorry. Bad habit,” Robin forces out. Her voice sounds rough, breathy, nothing like herself.
Nancy smiles, kind. Even this close to Robin, Nancy looks at her like there’s nothing wrong with her, with the way she is. All of Robin’s incompetence and how uncontrollable she feels sometimes, Nancy sees all of it. And Nancy, perfect fucking Nancy Wheeler, doesn’t shy away. She wants more, more of Robin.

Nancy nods, shrugging off her blazer and neatly folding it before placing it to the side. “Couple times. Few flings at Emerson here and there.”
She can’t help but smirk as she catches the flicker of envy behind Robin’s eyes. “Were they good?” she asks, sounding small and sullen and slightly sad, maybe, and Nancy thinks back and decides she can tell her the truth.
“None of them were you,” is what she says, simple as anything because it is, and Robin’s chest heaves, stutters, falls back down again.

At the beginning of every week, Robin and Nancy exchange papers. Robin hands in a short story, or the first few chapters of a project she’s working on. Nancy gives Robin some essays, or some articles she’s working on for the paper.
Nancy always thought that if she ever somehow got into fiction, it would, at the very least, be the published kind. But something keeps her coming back to the bleachers every Monday morning to swap projects with Robin Buckley.

“I was wondering - I wanted to ask if - well, my friends and I were wanting someplace to meet up once a month, just like for a weekend, and we were wondering if we would come stay with you? It’s kind of complicated, see, because-” Lou politely waits for Robin to finish her spiel, complete with loop-backs and tangents, fiddles with the twirls of the phone cord whilst he listens to her talk. He doesn’t need to hear it, though, because he said yes in his mind three minutes back.

Joyce and Hopper get married in the brilliant heat of July. The sun shines down upon the beachside venue. A beautiful arch covered in lilies sits off in the distance, the sea lapping up on the shore behind it. Nancy watches the glimmers atop the waves as they roll in and drift out. Listens to the sounds of the wedding guests milling about the beach house that would become a reception hall after the ceremony. It’s lovely. The whole scene is lovely.
A body eclipses the view, but Nancy sees who it is. The view is still lovely.
“I missed you!” Robin says, pulling— yanking— Nancy into a crushing hug.
Nancy grins, her smile hiding in the mess of Robin’s hair. “Missed you, too.”
