Summary
Evan “Buck” Buckley was not an honest person as much as he would like to be or even was trying to be in his own way. His dishonesty wasn’t malicious in the slightest though. He had his reasons, of course, but his entire identity was built on a shaky Jenga tower of lies. As much as he built it up, one by one the blocks were still removed over the years making the tower less and less stable.
Buck joined the 118 fresh out of the Navy and braced himself for all the questions that were about to come his way which he did not want to answer. Then, like a gift from above, somehow and shockingly, no one had read his resume, and he found he could start all over again, be a new person, someone completely different or maybe who he was supposed to be all along.

Burying his face in his hands, just to give himself a few seconds of respite, Eddie can’t help but let out a small sob. “I’m scared these feelings might have always been there.”
Eddie spirals as he realizes there's more going on between Buck and him than he'd allowed himself to process.

Summary
On a very windy night with rain falling down at the speed of a bullet, the tree that canopies Eddie’s house rocks and groans with the force of the wind tossing it side to side. His neighbor sends him a video of what it looks like, says, Thing looks like it's ready to go down!
Eddie sends back, at 8:15 P.M., Haha.
The thing goes down an hour later.
Suppose he hadn’t kissed his best friend that Monday. Perhaps the universe wouldn’t have done such a thing. Perhaps he wouldn’t be theorizing about the world’s motives right now. Perhaps he wouldn’t have to be facing the music and going downstairs to where Buck is working out and ask for a place to stay because, oh, hey, a tree destroyed my home.
or: Joy has never come without consequence for Eddie, so it only makes sense that once he kisses Buck they don’t speak for three days. And, oh—a tree falling on his house is the only reason they break the silence.

Okay, so Eddie isn’t a hundred percent sure Buck feels the same. But sometimes when Buck looks at him Eddie feels loved, like Buck is capable of making his love a solid thing with weight and density, that he places around Eddie’s shoulders like a cloak of Evan Buckley’s devotion.
The first problem with being in love with your best friend (who may love you back), who doesn’t know that you’re even an option—is that it means you have to make yourself an option, and the only way Eddie can be an option, is by telling Buck he is an option.
And the Buckley-Han New Year’s party, probably isn’t the time for The Big Gay Reveal™; queue jazz hands and confetti.
Or; It’s New Year’s Eve, and Eddie accidentally comes out to all of his friends throughout the night.

Buck is not trying to be dramatic or anything like that, but he thinks chances are high that his story is actually just a tragedy and he’s gonna turn into seafoam in the end.
Meanwhile, Eddie starts getting haunted by the music’s spirit of Chappell Roan. He does not like it.

Well, she had a point there.
Eddie shook his head, overwhelmed with his thoughts.
“Look, I appreciate it Bosko, but I just—I don’t know. This is my kid we’re talking about.”
“I know that, and I know how much you love him. Hell, you’ve sent me ten plus emails when I was watching him for you.”
Eddie looked to where there was a line coming out of their commanders office. He turned to Lena, giving his full attention.

"Yeah, Dad, the curse was so taken out of context!" Chris agrees enthusiastically with Buck and finally Eddie's laughter started to subside.
"Oh, please tell me you did not get our kid to start believing in curses," Eddie spoke and Buck could hear both the incredulous stare and fond smile through the phone.
"Well, of course curses are real," Buck started to defend.
"Evan," Eddie chastised.
"Look, all I'm saying is-"
"Buck," Eddie chastised again and this time Buck felt a rosy blush blooming on his cheeks. The name caught him so off guard that he allowed enough silence for Eddie to speak again, "Chris, mijo?"
Chris spoke up between his giggles, "Yeah, Dad?"
"Please tell me you still know curses aren't real," Eddie almost seemed to be pleading.

When Buck becomes a probationary firefighter at the 118, he doesn't mean to keep his family a secret. It's just hard to talk about his husband and son when Eddie's deployed overseas. At least if he can't talk to the 118 about Eddie and Chris, he can still talk to Eddie and Chris about the 118.
