Eddie’s head snaps up.
Maddie. Dispatch cadence – clean, clipped, controlled.
Chimney’s eyes flick to the radio, then to Eddie, before he answers.
“118, go ahead.”
Maddie continues, steady as a metronome.
“We have a reported MVC on the Fletcher Drive Bridge, repeat: multiple-vehicle collision. Units en route have visual confirmation of two cars at the scene.”
Eddie’s pulse stutters. He leans forward without meaning to, the seatbelt tugging tight across his chest.
Maddie keeps going, all professionalism, no tremor, until she hits the words that break.
“One of the vehicles is… a Jeep that went over the railing into the water.”

Summary
When Evan had left the ranch in Montana, wind in his hair and a familiar sort of heartbreak in his bones, the head rancher had given him a little paper bag as a parting gift.
“For safe travels,” he’d said, with a lopsided smile on his face that made Evan really, really want to stay. He still leaves, though, because there’s nothing left for him here, and there is still a world out there where things can be better, he’s sure of it.
In the Jeep, he opens the paper package, letting the thin chain slip into his hands. Hanging from it is a small medallion, flat and circular, inlaid with the image of a man holding a staff, a child on his back.
Saint Christopher, the note slipped alongside it says. To protect your travels.
Buck gets a Saint Christopher medallion on his travels. It changes nothing and everything.

It’s such a small thing, and yet Buck feels almost like he’s intruding by catching the moment, seeing it in its quiet intimacy.
He glances away, down at his own hands, and thinks rather wistfully, heart clenching something fierce in his chest: I’m never going to get that.
And it’s not the first time Buck’s had that thought; probably not even the tenth, or the hundredth. His brain tends to work a mile a minute, which means he’s used to things flitting through, sometimes with impact, sometimes without.
Now, though, it catches.
Sticks sharp and tacky in his mind.

They were trapped.
Fire hadn’t broken through yet, but it was coming. Buck could feel the heat pushing in, wrapping around them like a warning. The smoke thickened, clawing at their throats, painting the walls with a haze of panic.
“So…” Eddie’s voice cut through the haze, rough around the edges but maddeningly calm. “You wanna talk about it now?”
Buck turned slowly, disbelief etched across every exhausted line of his face, and he hoped his deadpan glare said it all. He didn’t need to ask what Eddie was referring to.
No, he didn’t want to talk about how he accidentally told his best friend he loved him just hours earlier.
He’d rather let the fire take him.

“I know,” he almost sobs, letting his head crash to the surface of the table. “But I don’t remember anything from that night, so I don’t know what happened. And we didn’t want to tell anyone because Eddie is trying to contact his lawyer to see how we can get it annulled, but I forgot to take off the ring. And Tommy saw. And-”
“Stop, wait, just a moment,” his sister interjects. “That’s why Tommy was yelling at you. He saw the ring?”
“Must have,” Chimney answers before Buck even has the chance to. “And obviously, he knew it was Eddie right away, because there never was any question on who Buck would marry given the chance.”
“Hey,” even though he feels the need to object to that, there is no heat in his voice. The longer he thinks about it, the more he realizes that his brother-in-law is completely right with that assessment.

"Hello, how can I help y-” he started to say before the words got caught at the base of his throat.
Dressed in casual grey sweats, a black fitted t-shirt and a distressed denim jacket, hair a mess on the top of his head and falling past his eyes, was Mingi. He looked unkempt, relaxed, soft, a complete contrast to how he looked on the court. Yunho stood there gaping at the man, he knew he was, and yet he found himself unable to stop, the shock of seeing Mingi being much too strong to hold back his emotions. He was so different from the boy he left behind. Brows furrowed in confusion, Yunho could see the cogs in his head turn as he slowly pieced together who it was that opened the door. His eyes widened, and the moment everything clicked into place was obvious. He blinked once, twice and sucked in a breath. Then as if the name had been forced out of his chest, he quietly gasped “Yunho”.
