“If you heard what we said, then you know what Puffy told me about you,” Tommy said, giving Wilbur a sticky sweet smile that was more akin to him baring his teeth.
Wilbur’s face must’ve reflected the way his heart skipped a beat at that, because Tommy’s grin widened now that he’d found a thread to pull.
“So?” Wilbur asked, struggling to act like he didn’t care about that part of the conversation.
“So, I want to know what’s wrong with you.”
The thread tugged right in the center of his chest, and Wilbur wondered if this was what it was like to unravel.
or, Wilbur is only a few months away from getting his degree when he has a mental breakdown and is unwillingly pulled out of his classes. With nothing to fill his days, Phil gets Wilbur a part time job at a local bookstore, where he finds himself getting trained by a loud-mouthed teenager who hates his guts right off the bat. Great. All he wants to do is graduate, but now he has to deal with a seventeen year old trying to get him fired. Thanks Phil.
But somehow, this kid ends up being exactly what Wilbur needs.

“You’re going to throw up again if you drink it too fast,” Techno said quickly. “Only take small sips for now.” Wilbur took a few sips and his throat felt good enough to talk.“Look at my twin takin’ care of me,” He croaked, he sounded just as sick as he felt. His throat, once clammy, was soothed, for now, but he knew it wouldn't be long until it acted up again.
Techno's lips had a light twitch, like he found the joke funny but refused to admit it, “Bruh, if you wanted me to take care of you so much, why didn’t you call me? You’re more than welcome to call me for anything."
Wilbur cringed. He had thought about it, but he didn’t want to be a bother. No one wanted to take care of a sick person-especially one as stubborn as him.
He ignored the fact that Techno still had to take care of him, even if he didn’t call.

Wilbur used his voice on the bakery worker to earn himself some bread. No one bats an eye as he scurries off with his newly acquired food.
Phil and Techno notice, though.
How that kid, probably a little younger than Techno, got away with just getting some free bread and running.
Techno thought back to the lady's face, cold, gray; her eyes had no emotion.
Once The kid was long gone, The lady returned to her normal state, putting a hand to her forehead, and just went back to work. Confused.
Techno glances at Phil, and in return, he got a puzzled face.
No ordinary child would be able to do that.
Or
Wilbur is a street kid and secretly a siren hybrid, and it just so happens Phil and Techno are hybrids in disguise,

Wilbur was never very good at new foster homes. It was awkward and uncomfortable and overall terrible. It's just entering a complete stranger's home and pretending it's your home. He hates nothing in this world more than that.
It was worse when he started going to them alone.
Now, Wilbur was walking into a new foster home, and he was more freaked out than normal. These people had called asking specifically for him. For Wilbur Soot. All he knew about the house was that the foster dad's name was Phil Craft and Wilbur had no idea who this man was.

Summary
Philza ran the Syndicate, the most powerful mafia in the country. With this comes certain rules and expectations he's set for the underground world he runs. Only Techno, his oldest son knows the family secret. 13-year-old Wilbur does not, but that doesn't mean he's free from the consequences of this fact. When Wilbur is kidnapped by a newly rising mafia in the city the rules of the game change. The Syndicate can fall and Philza must do everything within his power to keep it afloat and save his son. Meanwhile, Wilbur must try and stay alive long enough for his dad to come and save him. Yet, there's one question he can't figure out the answer to, what is the Syndicate and why is he involved?
OR, the Wilbur backstory so many of you have been requesting from my other fic Apologize for Collateral Damage. This fic does work as a stand alone! (Aka I do not have time to do a full Whumptober so you are all getting this)
