Summary
The thing is, you and Eddie aren’t dating—you just act like you are.
He’s been flirting with you since you were teenagers, and it started, if you had to guess, as Eddie’s best attempt at running damage control in the face of high school barbarism. The snide comments and backhanded compliments thrown at you for cheap clothes, trashy makeup, and whichever bodily features stood out as unsightly to Hawkins’ suburban middle class on any given day never truly got to you, but Eddie’s chosen remedy stuck around anyway, emboldened and dramatized with time and closeness.
So when the opportunity came up to move in together, your running game of cat and mouse solidified into, essentially, a 24/7 play-marriage.

“Y'know, Eddie, just because I'm a huge slut doesn't mean I'm gonna help you out every time you pop a stiffy in front of me.”
It sends him sputtering just as quickly as you hoped it would. He lifts himself onto his elbows and stares back at you in horror.
“Whuh— What? No, I know that, I'm not— I mean, fuck, I don't— I don't think you're a slut.”
You cock your head at him, blinking innocently. “You don’t?”
He shakes his head profusely, so deathly serious that it makes your heart swell. “No. Shit, of course not.”
You hum at that, appraising his dire face with a mild pout, and then slump your shoulders in exaggerated disappointment.
“...Christ, Munson, what’s it gonna take?”

“Hey, Munson.”
Eddie's pretty confident that he's the only Munson currently suffering enrollment at Hawkins High, but seeing Jason Carver, of all people, approach him outright in broad daylight is enough to make him wonder. Partially because, in all of the delightful years they've shared as peers, he can't recall a single time that he addressed him as anything other than 'freak.'
He also wonders, with surpassing urgency, if he's about to get his ass beat.

A compulsive, airy laugh gusts between your dry lips. “Um… It’s for you, actually.”
“For me?” he asks, lips twitching into a smile as he pulls himself upright, then stands to his feet. “What’s the occasion?”
“I guess it’s sort of an…early Valentine’s Day gift.”
His brow furrows as he steps around the table, and he looks like he thinks you’re fucking with him. It’s not like you’ve ever bought each other anything for Valentine’s Day before.

He tilts his head at you, grazing his thumb over your cheekbone with a sympathetic smile. “I know you do, honey, and you know I wanna give it to you, but Eddie’s got bills to pay, too.”
“I’ll still pay for it,” you insist. “Can’t we just…work something out?”
“Work something out, huh?” he echoes, skeptical. He’s a good actor. You’d almost think he didn’t know what you were getting at.

Eyes as wide as you’ve ever seen them, he raises one shaking hand and slaps himself across the face. It doesn’t work. He tries again, harder—punishing his lying eyes—and your eyebrows pull up in fond sympathy.
“You aren’t dreaming, Eddie,” you tell him.
The voice sounds close enough to your own. His face wavers pitifully as he shakes his head. You can’t be real.

Summary
One night, it all changes.
Trapped in another dream, you’re forced to watch yourself trudge slowly down a ruined street you vaguely recognize, littered with wet vines and dead cars and broken streetlamps like every other. Unremarkable minutes pass until, without warning, you stumble and fall as if you tripped over something, and as you hit the ground, you hear a pitiful, gnarled cry that you aren't even sure is human. It sends a shiver down your spine.
As you slowly pick yourself up on weak, stuttering arms, you freeze. A puddle on the sodden road, disturbed by your fall, evens out, and you see your face.
Not yours. Eddie’s.

You’d heard about them before, in one seedy cantina or another; bounty hunters and spice-slingers sharing embellished tales of their dealings with the elite imperial Inquisitors, willing traitors to the Jedi Order rewarding hefty sums in exchange for information about any known force-sensitives, rumored to be ruled by the infamous Lord Vader himself. At the time, you were certain that you’d avoid their notice so long as you kept your head down and remained mobile--after all, an unremarkable former-padawan such as yourself could easily fall under the Empire’s radar, right? Who would’ve taken notice of your death, let alone your unlikely survival?
The odds of you of all people being tracked down or recognized must have been low, but evidently still higher than you gave the Empire credit for.
