Summary
It took a while for Adam to notice and it took him by surprise when he finally did.
Once he became aware of it, it was a static, constant truth, hanging in the air between the two of them whenever they made eye contact. Impossible to ignore, implausible to mention. But it was always there, the knowledge threatening to spill out of Adam and light the calculated balance between him and Ronan on fire.

. Blue had one hand wrapped around Ronan's jaw, forcing his head into an upward tilt. Her tongue was between her teeth in concentration. Her other hand was being used to carefully dab silver glitter up the high cliffs of Ronan's cheekbones.
Adam stopped in the doorway. Gansey, who had been a step behind him, stopped because he did.
It took Adam a full second to process what he was seeing. The facts, simply stated, were this:
1. Ronan was wearing make-up. Dark, smoky make-up that made him kinda look like one of the eighties rockstars Maura liked so much, but miles harsher.
2. Ronan suited it. Like, a lot. And Adam liked it. Like, a lot

Outside, the world was doing twilight the way it only did in Virginia. The humid air stuck to Adam; the evening breeze cooled him down. It smelled of wild, unchecked greenery and cooking meat and, faintly, cow shit. The powdery sky was pinked up along the edges, as though it had gotten a sunburn. From some tree or other, a raven coughed out a noise that sounded both raucous and profane.
Despite his best intentions, there was still something inside Adam that ached for this place.Adam Parrish returns to Henrietta, Virginia to deal with his late mother's estate, only to find that Blue Sargent, his ex-something, is getting married. This would be easier to ignore if he didn't keep running into her asshole friend.

"A snake," Calla added, sounding like one herself.
"A companion." Maura frowned at Adam. "This isn't something for you to do alone."
The only reason Adam didn't tell them to fuck off was because, really, he loved them and they loved him as much as he'd ever allowed. But the thought of taking someone on this doomed cross country road trip led by nothing but three cards and an urgent feeling inside him, filled him with equal parts nausea and dread.
"And who exactly do you think I'm going to take?"
Adam and Ronan meet, embark on a road trip, and probably get lost in the wilderness at least once.
Or, if a time bending, space defying, cosmic creation shaped like a forest temporarily loses its grip on reality, does it still make a sound?
