Summary
Dan still can't quite believe what words came out of their mouths live on the internet in front of an audience that is not wholly theirs. He couldn't resist calling Phil his; even if he couched it in a joke, he hopes the truth of it came across, translated through pixels and screens as the claim that it was meant to be.
And, of course, Phil wouldn't just let him get away with that, not without making a claim of his own, much more obfuscated, but no less devastating for what it is.

He doesn't know what the future holds, or even if he's rehearsing for a show that is going to be called off. Phil can see the way he holds the tension in his body, the straight lines of his shoulder accentuated by his bright, red shirt and the straps of the leather apron. The way he's standing so straight, so rigidly uncomfortable that a strong breeze could snap him in half. The lost look on his face, his brows drawn in tight, mouth set in a thin line. His black-clad fists curled into a hard grip at his side.
Phil has never seen someone so in need of some stress relief in his life

There is something startlingly uncanny about staring at yourself in the mirror for too long. At first glance, the reflection is easily recognizable as you, with your eyes and the familiar slope of your nose and the way your hair usually falls, but with prolonged looking, the lines of your face start to shift and blur, and suddenly the reflection before you is a stranger wearing features that are similar but different enough to yours that it makes your hackles raise.
Or, maybe it's just Dan that feels that way; maybe other people aren't entranced by their own reflections staring at them like they've never seen themself before.
Either way, that's what is going through Dan's head as he stares at someone who could only be him, but doesn't really look like him at all.

The door is locked tight and the curtains are drawn, but Phil can tell that it's just after three in the morning — the devil's hour. Phil smirks.
His summoner, through all of his despondency, if you look past the trembling limbs and tear-streaked face, is quite enchantingly beautiful. Daniel Howell is kneeling on the floor, just on the other side of the chalk. With his hands fisted at his knees, he looks up at Phil through wet eyelashes, his face framed with hair that is too straight to be natural. His eyes are a deep, soulful brown, and they look at Phil like he holds the answers to everything.
Phil almost pities him.

When Dan gets overwhelmed, he runs away. This is a fact of life that he has learned to accept and adapt around by now.
Being a well-known mental health ambassador really only amplifies his need to make quick escapes sometimes. Like right now, for example. He hadn't expected the Chelsea Flower Show to be so overwhelming — normally he's able to blend into the background at press events like this and only do a couple of interviews, but five different reporters have flagged him down already. So, he absconded after the most recent one, fleeing into a less populated exhibit.
Surprisingly, the Lovehoney exhibit isn't empty when he gets to the threshold of it; YouTube sensation Phil Lester is in there looking harried, with his hair mussed and his skin flushed red. He has a wild kind of look in his eyes when he looks over at Dan.

The Golden Pig is a nice enough ship; it's not one of those huge cruise liners that hold thousands of people, but it's smaller and more intimate and Dan actually feels like he has made more connections on this trip than he would have on the more typical Royal Caribbean cruise he usually works on.
And yet, despite being friendlier with his fellow crew members on this voyage, Dan can't help but sequester himself to a corner during the post-cruise after party for the crew now that all of the passengers have disembarked. He's feeling a little shy, and maybe a little uncharacteristically bummed at the end of his contract, and instead of taking advantage of his last night on the boat, he's moping and nursing his third drink by himself.
