Summary
For only a second, and maybe she imagined it, Carol thought she saw a glimmer of the most human expression Zosia had worn yet: annoyance.
“And you’ll still be working on reversing this?” Zosia asked.
“We wouldn’t be very good heroes if we didn’t, now would we?”

Summary
“Not that I don’t enjoy scorching on the outskirts of New Mexico with you—” she starts off, her hand trailing from Zosia’s chin in order to card through chlorine-tipped stray hairs. “—But I’m going to burn through my reading list eventually… hah, I never thought that would be something I’d say and believe.”
Read to your heart's desire, Carol—we’ll wait on sun-baked earth and in country club pools for however long it takes; recover the texts lost to the Library of Alexandria if you must.
—or, snapshots of the world's most delusional honeymoon period.

Summary
“Have you ever fucked on a plane?”
The question slips past Carol’s lips without second thought. Albuquerque lights glowing beneath her. Lights that will soon shut off. A sadistic asshole left behind at her cul-de-sac with nothing but his thoughts and machete to keep him company.
She looks to her left. Zosia is busy glitching out. Eyes distant. The question too much for seven billion brains.
“I know that ‘You,’ capital ‘y’ have,” Carol clarifies. “I’m asking about Zosia. Pre-joining.”
“Yes, I understood,” Zosia replies. Flashing that eerily pleasant smile Carol’s way. “And no. I never did something like that. Travel wasn’t common for me.”

Summary
“What do you all dream about, anyway,” Carol asked.
“Colors,” Zosia said. “And language, sound. Architecture.”
Carol lifted her head. “Architecture?”
Zosia either smiled with just one side of her mouth — which was new — or Carol could only see one side — which was also new. In either case, her own mouth felt dry.
“Systems,” Zosia said. “Simplicity. We’re interested in continuity.”

Summary
“We can help,” Zosia said, suddenly right behind her. Carol jumped, then relaxed when she felt Zosia’s hand rest on her back. “Here,” she whispered.
Her fingers were cool as she brushed the hair away from Carol’s face, soothing in their slow pace, their gentle touch. Carol winced as the room began to spin, and Zosia pouted.
“Shh, Carol,” she murmured. Carol whined, but Zosia just guided her by the back while she cooed. “Let us help.”
(carol gets too drunk. zosia takes care of her.)

He takes the glasses from her hand gingerly, slides them onto his face. Wow. Wow. She’s immediately steering him by the shoulders to the milky old mirror above Kier Eagan’s washbasin so he can see himself.
“Mark,” she breathes. “You look so good.”

Summary
The sun drifts down through the trees through the garden, a warm breeze ruffling over her untied hair, the back of Mark’s head. The sound of bird song is still a novelty to her. Something that she doesn’t take for granted. They should get a bird feeder. One of those baths, too, she thinks.

Summary
“I know I can’t draw or have any creative ability, really, but -- even if I did, I’m not sure I’d be able to capture how you look to me. You have the kind of face that people would have gone to war for, once.”
She raises an eyebrow, but the persistent flush of her face gives away how she really feels about that. “No creative ability? You know, you could have just called me pretty.”
Helly and Mark give the whole honeymoon ending thing a go.
(A story about art, two toothbrushes next to the bathroom sink, the privilege of growing old, and sunflowers.)

Summary
It’s while she’s turned to face Dylan, and Mark still has his eyes on her, that he sees it. Just when the collar of her shirt shifts slightly and exposes her collarbone. A small, round bruise. Purple, no bigger than a quarter. And it takes a few moments for Mark’s brain to slot in the name for it— there’s been no use for him to think of the word before now. A hickey. Someone put their mouth on Helly’s neck and left it there long enough to leave a bruise.
And Mark’s suit suddenly feels uncomfortably warm, as his brain unwillingly places himself into the position of being the one to give it to her.
…
Helly comes into work with a hickey. Mark is distracted.

Summary
She can still remember Mark telling her that there was a life to be had down here; and how pathetic she’d thought him, accepting the smallness of his world so willingly. Part of her still feels that way, raging at the injustice that this dusty room and these plastic sheets are all they’re ever going to have, their existences portioned out eight hours at a time. But this is real, and the person Mark loves is real. She’ll never be the one that has to pretend. And she’ll make her eight hours burn brighter with more pleasure and joy than Helena Eagan has known in a lifetime.
Episode 2.06 AU where Mark’s brain doesn’t immediately explode. Helly wants to do all the things she missed out on while her outie was pretending to be her. So Mark. She’s mostly doing Mark.

Summary
Helly wouldn’t want it any other way. That’s what she tells herself, at least. Because this way, there are no more scary or happy or sad numbers to sort through. No more break room mantras and mysterious goat departments. No more sad melon parties and vending machine tokens. Mark is with her, always. They have a life together, even if it is only in 46-hour increments. They have a bed to sleep and make love in, plenty of food to eat, and a decent supply of entertainment.
Yeah, this was a good decision.
