Summary
Mark awakens in the elevator and finds he is holding his hand over his eyes, which is weird. And even weirder, he can make out some letters in his field of vision. It looks like they are floating in the air. He closes his eyes and now sees the outline clearly. It says "Who is alive?"
An AU diverging in one tiny way: when Reghabi shows up while Mark is in his car trying to burn an image into his retinas (S2E3), he decides not to talk to her. This causes all the events of S2 to unfold differently: Mark doesn't start reintegrating that night, and he figures out how to communicate with his innie. Innie Mark doesn't get a nosebleed, so he doesn't miss work, and instead he and Helly try and figure out how to rescue Ms. Casey and find the black hallway. Mark doesn't have experimental brain surgery, and it turns out that not having their brains scrambled leaves both Marks in a better mood with more capacity to cultivate a relationship with each other. Innie Mark arrives at the birthing cabin (S2E9/10) feeling cared for by his outie, and their conversation goes a bit differently. How might this affect their prospects for a successful reintegration and the momentous decision innie Mark will make at the exit stairwell?

Lumon Industries is under federal investigation, and the Board decides to use an untested and diabolical function of the Severance chip to literally silence the prosecution's star witness Mark Scout, a former Severed employee who has reintegrated and whose testimony could bring down the company. Helena Eagan has another reason for wanting to try out the Freeze Frame protocol: she has a paralysis fetish and needs some new material to jerk off to. It's Mark's sad misfortune to be both the star witness and the object of Helena's latest fixation.
Canon compliant through S2E10, but with some post-season 2 developments described in "full circle". You don't have to read that to follow this story. But I'd love it if you did! 😊

"I've seen it. I've seen innies ask their outies to resign." Petey grabs his raisins from the vending machine, and settles in at the table, Mark right beside him without a second's hesitation. "The pressure of important projects can get to people."
"The work is mysterious and important," Mark says, because it's true. "You told me that on day one."
Petey seems to be examining his face for something. "Yeah, but I don't want you to go," he says. "The other guys are good, but – " He drops his voice a bit. "They're not as interesting as you are."
That's flattering. "I'm interesting?" Mark asks, honestly surprised.
Petey pops open his raisin container and laughs. "You can carry a conversation without relying on swearing or Kier," he says. "That makes you interesting to me."
Mark feels a strange kind of warmness wash over him. "Huh," he says. "I mean, you're interesting, too."
