Summary
The Soldier pulls his target’s body to the shore of the river painfully, his dislocated right arm making it difficult to swim and hold on to the dead weight, but he can’t confirm death if the body is lost. He drops it on the muddy shore and observes the gunshot wounds bleeding heavily, meaning the target’s still alive. The Soldier pulls a slim dagger from its holster, the only weapon left on him, besides his metal arm. He looks down at the man in the bloody red white and blue costume, and an image pops into his head…big and bright Captain America, laughing with…him? He shakes his head, damn distracting hallucinations…

Summary
The Soldier stutters forward, placing its metal hand upon the bedsheets. "Permission to speak," it croaks.
"Granted." The handler holds its gaze.
"What...what is my mission?"
The handler considers for a moment, then: "Effective immediately, your mission is to obtain optimal levels of hydration, caloric intake, and sleep for at least seven continuous days. Understood?"
The Soldier nods. This is a test of its self-sufficiency. Its new owners want to know what it functions like at peak performance. Furthermore, the Soldier suspects that its owners want it to acclimate to these luxuries.
So they can take them all away again.

Summary
Things change every time It sleeps. It is dog, soldier, the winter soldier, asset. It cannot remember being called anything else, cannot remember what it was like being out from under someone's thumb. Handlers change, grow old, new ones replace them. They retrain It to fit their needs and It lets them. Every time It is put into the cold machine to sleep, It wonders if the next time It wakes, will It have a new handler?
The first thing It sees is blue. Warm blue eyes narrowed like It’s worth something.
