“Kingsley,” Peregrine’s sharp eyes found them in the rearview mirror, “Shush, let Clémmie handle it.” The younger pouted at that and slumped back in their seat. Peregrine really couldn’t blame them though, it had been four hours in the car since they had all set out to visit the shore. Everyone was getting kind of squirmy, except for Cole who had fallen asleep after the first half hour.
They suspected Kingsley was mostly just sour about not calling shotgun first.

“One week on the couch?” Mira offered.
“Two weeks in the bathhouse?” Rumi countered, earning a nod from Mira.
“Close! A road trip.”
Silence.
Zoey continued, eyes gleaming like she’d just discovered electricity and the idea itself was generating the power to propel her forward. “I’m serious. Just us. No photoshoots. No 6 a.m. dance practice. No demons. We go off-grid. Drink gas station slushies and check out roadside attractions.”
Mira raised a brow. “And go where, exactly? A bunker? A commune?”
Zoey threw a cushion at her. “America. We go to America. Rent a car. Bad playlists. Late-night diners and drives. Maybe crash a wedding. C’mon. It’ll be fun!”
Mira blinked. “...That’s worse.”
Rumi stared at her like she’d grown a second head. “You want to fly halfway around the world so we can spend two weeks smelling like car air freshener and fighting over whose playlist gets the aux cord?”
“Yes,” Zoey said brightly. “Exactly that.”
