Summary
After the RK line is targeted by extremists post-revolution, Gavin Reed is tasked with bodyguarding Connor. He drives them to the middle of nowhere where Connor gets to learn more about who Reed is in his private life. And maybe, Reed gets to learn more about himself. Can Gavin keep Connor safe? Will they be found before Hank can solve the case?

Summary
Emotions are not Gavin's strong suit. He has the emotional intelligence of a rock smashed through a window, and is only a little bit more tactful. But it doesn't take magic plastic mind melding to deduce that Nines was more distant than he'd ever been, and- yeah! Yeah, it stung a little! More than a little, maybe, maybe it hurt just as much as a fucking freight train to the gut, but nobody could blame him.
Loathe as he was to admit it, Gavin had grown... attached.

Connor stands there in the snowfall and thinks of Gavin Reed, a man it had met only twice and with varying levels of antagonism, but had lived through a lifetime with. It thinks of his strength of spirit, his perseverance, his fortitude. And it wonders what it might be like, being loved by him. If his capacity for love is great enough to carve a path through the cold, plastic casing of an android.
Connor stands there in the snowfall and it wonders if Gavin would even care enough to try.
(Or, an alternate universe fic where soulbonds are real, memory-sharing can happen at any moment, and a certain android sent by CyberLife is about to be in for a rude awakening concerning those first two points.)

Gavin was ready to give up on life. His life had been going downhill since right before the revolution and he had closed himself off from everyone. He was starting to plan on quietly disappearing just as soon as this serial killer case was solved. Even then, he wondered why he was sticking around. It was not like anyone actually needed or wanted him. Then he woke up, a captive of the suspect and its crazy experimentations. He had wanted to disappear, but not like this.
The torture shocked his mind, giving Gavin visions to escape into. A glimpse into the lives of others like him. Maybe, just maybe, before he died he could find hope again.

Things have already been bad. String-of-mangled-bodies-turned-trafficking-investigation bad. And that’s on top of the standard every-day kinds of bad the job always is—shit like Fowler breathing down his neck about his goddamn “attitude problem,” and Anderson’s pet bot strutting around the office turning himself into everyone’s favorite computerized puppy, and the coffee machine in the breakroom still being busted even though apparently they had the spare cash lying around to get a second fucking detective-droid.
Oh, yeah. They have a second one now. RK900—the absolute bleeding edge of law enforcement technology. And because God has a sick sense of humor and a personal vendetta against him, specifically, he’s had it attached to his ass as a carbon-fiber babysitter for the past week.
Or, an examination of how Gavin Reed comes to understand (and maybe even like. A little. Maybe) the RK900.

Summary
Gavin took a deep breath. In a former life, this information could have made his career. In this life though… It’s a good thing none of it was his fucking business.
He reapplied his tourniquet, checked to make sure the drug in his syringe was still good, and guided the needle into his vein. He exhaled a long and satisfied breath when the warm, fuzzy waves wiped his stress away.
Detroit’s drug problems were no longer his problem. Well… he chuckled at the irony, because they were, more than ever, his problem… but the DPD and their “war on drugs” and whatever lives might be at stake… none of that mattered any more.
It was not his problem.

Nines strokes a finger over the discolorations born from age, trails over the laugh-lines etched into his skin and tries to commit every single detail to memory.
Time is a cruel and fickle thing but right now… right now Gavin remembers him and in this moment of clarity he makes Nines promise to be happy. The ring flickers red over Gavin’s left hand. It’s synced to the LED Nines never found reason to pry from his hull. His own ring, black and silver with wisps of green the colour of Gavin’s eyes, pulses in a steady rhythm.
