“So I’ve been wondering – do you remember?” James asks. There’s something keen and speculative in his dark eyes as he rounds the corner of the desk, leaving no barrier between him and Sherlock.
“Do I remember what,” Sherlock answers, irritable.
“How to dodge, of course,” James says, and his fist appears in Sherlock’s periphery.
A few months after returning from Constantinople, Sherlock is adjusting to post-adventure life fitfully. The return of one James Moriarty in his life, still chasing after a game, only continues to complicate things.

Stood on the sand-dusted pavement, Boris had popped open an umbrella and said, “I don’t like the sun,” but it wasn’t then.
It was in the car, driving through Hell’s Kitchen - Theo had laughed and said, “I’m a ‘vampire’ too,” his fingers crooking quotes around the word in the air.
“What is this?” Boris had laughed back, mimicking the gesture over and over until everything he said over the next twenty minutes had read like sarcasm, like a figure of speech.
It was in the hall outside the ballroom, Boris standing in front of an ornate mirror he wasn’t reflected in, and at the time Theo’s mind had worked too fast around the details of getting his painting back to think much of it, other than a passing thought that it couldn’t have been a mirror then, but rather an empty frame to enclose around Boris until he became a painting himself.
[Or Theo loses his life in Amsterdam, so Boris gives him another.]

Amusingly, I’d realized that he used my perceived comfortability with touch to outsource touching that may be required of himself. He’d have me greet unfamiliar Scotland Yard officials with a firm handshake or a pat on the arm so that he was free to stand stiffly by my side or begin climbing over a crime scene. He’d introduce me immediately to clients so that I could greet them as was proper, leaving him to perch on his chair with his fingers steepled or circle them like some great bird. With myself in tow, he was given permission to touch others less.
However, he’d continued to touch me more.

Summary

As Arthur and John try to adjust to a normal life, John discovers that gender is not his favorite human invention. Noel offers to marry "Jane" as strictly a matter of convenience--but when they start to date for the benefit of Noel's colleagues, he finds that he's enjoying it more than he should.
It's fine. It's practical. Noel wouldn't do anything stupid like really fall in love. And Arthur's absolutely, definitely not jealous of John's growing bond with Noel. And John certainly doesn't have any secrets left that might threaten the small peace they're starting to find...
