Summary
Stede seems determined to win Edward back. It must be why he keeps “accidentally” showing up in Edward’s life.
Izzy scoffs. “He just doesn’t learn, does he? Tell him Blackbeard has no use for apologies.”
“Yeah,” Edward says. “That’s true. I don’t. But also, unrelated to that other thing, what else did he say about me?”
Frenchie blinks. “Um. Nothing? The message came tied to a seagull’s leg so. You know. Not much real estate on those little papers. Can’t write a lot, can you?” He straightens suddenly. “Oh, I still have it!”
He fishes a crumpled, wind-dampened piece of paper from his pocket and drops it into Edward’s hand. When Edward unfurls it, he sees only a series of poorly-drawn images: The Revenge with a little triangle sail, a rope ladder and an arrow, a caricature of Stede looking like he’s crying.
“We really need to teach you guys how to read,” Edward notes.

Blackbeard stares at him with vacant eyes. Jesus. Lucius is viscerally reminded of the man's dead-eyed look before he pushed him overboard.
"Does it feel like the right choice for you? Are we happy with it?"
"Do you have a fever?" Blackbeard asks, voice hoarse.
Lucius cocks his head and says, "Don't think so. Do I look hot?" He winks.
Blackbeard lifts his hand and presses his fingers roughly against Lucius' forehead.
"What are you—"
"No fever," Blackbeard grunts and draws back. "Good. Didn't want to cut off your fucking hand."
Lucius drawls, "I'm touched."
Or: Lucius survives. For better or for worse.

Ed’s shock finally cracks down the middle to let all that white hot rage back into his head, springing him to lean over the deck with his hands braced on the edge. “Like hell you’re fucking boarding. This is my ship now.” He flips both birds for good measure to Stede’s gasping afront. “Piss off!”
“Your ship!” Stede responds, shuffling toward the front of the dinghy at that point so the Swede and John have to take over the rowing. “We need to have some words—“

Summary
Slowly, a theory began to form in Ed's mind. If Mary had replaced Stede when he was away sailing, and then Stede had inconveniently reappeared... The solution was obvious. Really, Ed should have seen it before he even arrived. Afterall, he had nearly done the same thing himself. What really are the odds that a person would be mauled by a jungle cat, hit by a carriage, and struck by a piano all on the same day?
So yes. Mary killed Stede, and now Ed was in the uncomfortable position of having to avenge that death himself.
He can't think of any other option. He can't just let Mary walk away from this. Stede had come home for her. He had abandoned the sea - abandoned him - for her. Sure, this house has lots of other nice things in it, like paintings and dishes and silks, but they had those on the ship. No, Stede had come back to Mary, and she had killed him for it.
And as Stede's former co-captain, Ed has an obligation to murder her in return.
Or, Ed hears that Stede Bonnet is dead and decides to offer his condolences to the Widow Bonnet. If only Ed knew that Stede was still alive, and Mary knew that Ed was the notorious pirate Blackbeard.

"No," Ed says. "Back off."
"Ah. Right, well, the thing is, I can't really do that, can I?"
Ed is no stranger to an affable threat, having delivered a few in his time, but it's still funny to hear from Stede. He can't help himself; he chuckles a little. "No?"
"Not really," Stede says, sounding almost apologetic. "Because we're both caught in the same current, see? And the dinghy's in the lee of the ship, so I don't think there's enough wind to get us out."

They look big and strong from where they’re neatly folded in the man’s lap and Ben resolutely bites down on any innuendo threatening to claw its way up his throat, knowing it’s only going to worsen this situation. If this guy is really going to be following him around for the foreseeable future, he better at least try to be civil with him.
He has the feeling it’s going to be a long few weeks.
