    Summary

Sunday's eyes are fixed on the piano. He can't explain why, but something about it is captivating.

It's been a very long time since Sunday's played piano.

"Uh, Passenger Sunday?" the Conductor repeats, and Sunday blinks, stiffening as he glances down to meet their eyes, widened slightly in expectation.

"I - sorry," he stammers, clasping his hands together before him in an effort to keep him from tugging his feathers. "I was just - I didn't know there was a piano aboard the Express."

Pom-Pom glances back at it, a small sigh leaving their lips. "Ah, yes," they say, shaking their head. "That old thing... it belonged to Akivili, many years ago."

They say this in the same tone one might say we found it on the side of the road amongst the trash and not this instrument belonged to the long-dead Aeon of the Trailblaze.

The crew of the Astral Express, as Sunday quickly learns, love music.

Or: five times Sunday played piano for a Nameless, and once he played for someone else.

    Summary

Curly gets distracted by the music softly flowing from the radio, humming along and quietly singing to the solemn tune of Jeff Buckley’s Lover, You Should’ve Come Over. Anya joins in. He looks at her, her carefree smile, so charming and so pretty, bubbly and beautiful. He stares, watching as she karaoke’s the rest of the song like a lovesick fool.

Shit. This might be more than a work crush, Curly realizes, and that’s all too scary. He pushes it down.

She wraps his hand in gauze. He beams at her and hops up off the nursing bed. ❝ Thanks, mate. ❞ He says, and Anya lets out a small pfft.

    ❝ You’re welcome, mate. ❞

He can’t find it in himself to be offended.

    Or,
Curly falls in love. Anya does, too.

    Summary

“Math?” And a published academic journal, at that?

“Yes.” Ratio returns the book to his bag, carrying on, but Aventurine’s stuck on the fact that this is apparently what he does in his free time outside of composing music.

“…I thought you were a pianist.”

    “I am a pianist.”

“But– math?” Even Aventurine doesn’t spend that much time thinking about math, and he spends twelve hours a day staring at financial models.

“Does it not occur to you that it's possible to have more than one interest?”

Aventurine lives the same week on repeat: eighty hours of his soul-sucking high finance job, then two nights of dancing off the stress to the beat of his favorite anonymous DJ. His move into a luxury apartment building brings him next door to Ratio, an esteemed classical composer with a love for piano. Eager to make a good impression, Aventurine keeps his clubbing habit under wraps — but he’s not the only one hiding secrets under strobe lights.

    Summary

Desperate for new experiences, desperate to truly live, Sunday abandoned his life in the city.

Between whispers of what lurked in the dark and his own self-doubt, Sunday was drowning in that distant mountain town. A place that was supposed to give him new opportunities. Isolated and growing tired, Sunday's glowing hope came in the form of a certain enigmatic neighbor, and his dog.

    Summary

The cruelest thing about the Nameless was that they made it so easy to pretend that Sunday belonged. They fed that greedy, stupid, childish thing that cried out from within him, tossing enough scraps of amity for him to piece them together into something that felt like home. The curtains only closed when Sunday lay awake at night and stared at the ceiling of the bedroom that wasn’t really his, and he remembered that it started like this and could only end like this: with him, alone in the dark.

Sunday is found by the Astral Express Crew after fleeing Penacony. He accepts their offer to join, and realizes that

    a. fitting into this tight-knit group is likely impossible
    b. trouble finds the Trailblazers no matter where they go.

or, the chronicle of the Astral Express trying, failing, and trying again to fit Sunday into their family.
