Summary
During the Barry the Chopper Incident, all Ed had been able to think was "I'm going to die.". Afterwards, healing from his cuts and sitting with Al, he'd realized how important it was to stay with Al, no matter what. The thought of leaving his baby brother behind, trapped in armor, was something that tore at his very being. And being a state alchemist, he needed a backup plan- a failsafe.
What do you do when your body is about to be killed? You use the kill switch and throw your soul into your brother's armor. Easier said than done, but nothing two alchemy prodigies can't handle. It was only supposed to be the backup plan that they'd never need to use if everything went right.
Only everything goes wrong shockingly often in the military, and neither Ed nor Alphonse expected the team to have to fish Ed's apparently dead body out of the river after a case gone wrong.
A story of clandestine tattoos, brotherhood, parental Roy and Mama Hawk, and Roy tearing his hair out realizing these kids are going to be the death of him.

“Are you sure he’s not just run off on his own?” Havoc could tell from his superior’s tone, even over the radio, that he was trying to calm himself down.
“Fullmetal is down, 451 East Street, I need an ambulance, oh God please no….”
“Is that… is that Edward?” Roy couldn’t keep the disbelief from his voice. How could he? He’d ridden in the ambulance with Edward a handful of times before, but the sight of the body bag was so foreign and ridiculous, it didn’t even register in his mind….
And thus began the nightmarish incident that would take years off team Mustang's life.

Summary
The men pulled, and something came free- with a splash and a clank, something metal fell out of the end of the pipe and landed in the drainage ditch at their feet.
It was about three feet long, and made of metal.
“What the fuck is that?” one of the men on the line asked, voice hushed.
One of them picked it up- it was an arm, an automail arm- not attached to anything, only the rope still firmly tied around the wrist.
Roy felt nausea bubble up in him like regret, and turned to the nearest soldier.
“Get me a damn light- I’m going in after him!”
Something was terribly wrong.
Edward Elric tries to avoid giving his report and do a good deed. Roy Mustang tries to avoid pondering his role in Edward's life. Both fail miserably. And it's all because of the damn rain.
A slow burn of excitement, angst, drama, trauma, hurt/comfort, and found family. Maybe in that order.

After Ed vastly exaggerates a little cold and claims to be too sick to work, Roy calls a doctor, who calls his bluff. A week later, when it's gotten worse and he's actually in no shape to report, Roy doesn't believe him and makes him report anyway. Things go bad, but Roy and Hughes save the day :)

But in the middle of a thunderstorm, with a sobbing boy in Ed’s arms and a madwoman laughing in chains, …he doesn’t wonder if Edward was ever too young for this.
He wonders why he let himself forget.

Summary
Both of the brothers are laughing and now sipping on their mixed sodas, maybe this wasn’t such a bad idea Edward thought to himself, he was just happy to see his brother laughing and having fun, it had been way too long since they both had their bodies. They hadn’t started puberty before the transmutation, now look at them being teenagers and sneaking alcohol when the adults weren’t home. Ed checked the time and it was 8:30, they still had another 2 hours until mustang and hawkeye were supposed to come back.
Then the door opened.
Oh no.The Elric Brothers just want to be normal teenagers.

The hunger pains didn’t even register as pain anymore. Instead it was almost like a physical sense of accomplishment. Proof that he was paying his penance in whatever way he could.
