Summary
Stede and Ed's relationship ended months ago, but Stede hasn't been able to let it go. He's amazed when Ed agrees to participate in The Ex-House with him, sharing a tiny house on live television for six weeks to win the grand prize.
“Hello, Edward!” he says, forcing brightness. Remembers to look at his face - two seconds at a time is perfectly acceptable, look at the face, not directly into the eyes - tries to remember to turn his lips up into a friendly smile. Behind Ed, the door whooshes closed again and leaves them in silence.
Ed’s fully clad in leather, which is always a good look for him. Slight hint of eyeliner. One arm bare, showing off the winding snake tattooed into his skin. Beard trimmed short. Hair up, as well, properly styled. Small silver dagger earring dangling from one ear.
He looks unapproachably hot. The kind of guy that would skim over Stede without a second glance. The kind of guy that would sniff out Stede’s oddness in a second and push Stede down as a way to lift himself up. There are probably people watching on their televisions right now, wondering how the hell the two people in this room were ever together in the first place.

Summary
Usually, Stede seems to love the dirtiness that comes with their garden (Ed shouldn’t really call it theirs, since his only contribution is to stare at Stede’s flat ass in those fraying overalls, but Stede claims it’s motivating). Where Stede normally gets shivery and upset when faced with dirt, he’ll rummage in the soil with all the joy of an unsupervised three-year-old, albeit with significantly more judgment on how many inches should be between each trellis for the tomatoes. As long as it’s in service of their blossoming yard, Stede is down for any amount of grit and grime.
Except when he isn’t.

A knock sounds at Jim’s door.
“For fuck's sake –“ Jim groans, shoving themself up from the couch, phone pressed tight to their ear. If Lucius is back again to interrupt their Valentine’s day phone call with Ed, they’re going to kill him. “Shit, sorry, give me a second, Lucius is being a dickhead.”
Ed’s laughter rings through the phone speaker. “Take your time.”
Unlocking their door, Jim swings it open, already glaring at whoever’s on the other side, holding their phone against their chest so Ed won't hear them ream Lucius out. “Lucius, I swear to fucking god –“
Jim stops. Jim stares.
It isn’t Lucius at the door.
Ed Teach smiles at them with dark red lips, her own cellphone pressed to her ear. She winks, and Jim’s heart starts racing. “Hey, lover. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
Jim is expecting to spend Valentine's day alone, because you don't get a fancy dinner date when your sort-of-maybe-girlfriend is a famous rockstar who's on tour across the country. But a surprise visit from Ed turns the night into something beautiful.

This time, they aren’t surprised that Archie kisses them. They see it coming from a mile away, knew as soon as she pressed between their thighs and cupped their cheek with her hand that it would lead to this. They need it, and they think she needs it too. There’s been too much blood, too much rain, and they both need something solid and real.
Her mouth is warm against theirs, a shocking contrast to how fucking cold the rest of them is. They grip her leather-wrapped wrist tight, slide a hand into her soaking wet hair, and kiss back desperately.
They’re both gasping when they finally separate for air. Foreheads pressed together, warmth finally starting to build. Still wet and bloody but Christ, she’s right, they’re alive.

“Yessir, well met. And your business partner, Mister…?”
“Jeff, the accountant,” Ed said, glancing at Stede.
“Mister…” prompted Stede.
“Teach?”
“Mister Teach, the accountant. I thought you were merchant captains?” The landlord looked between them uncertainly.
“I am in charge of the accounting,” said Ed. “Money and numbers and sh… shtuff. Trade deals and so on.”
“And I do the actual captaincy,” said Stede with a reassuring smile. “I was knighted for my outstanding seamanship.”

Lucius says nothing, just tips his glass to finish his drink so he can use the coaster to fan himself. He lets the silence stretch until Stede’s unstoppable impulse to chatter finally wins out.
“Alright,” Stede sighs, taking a prim sip of his beer. “I admit I may be feeling a little adrift.”

When Stede finds out Ed has never sat for a portrait, he requests that Lucius see to the matter.
The only problem? Lucius has spent the past several weeks claiming he can only draw nude figures, so he doesn't have to sketch Stede at every given opportunity. It's a lie, but a useful one, especially when so many handsome pirates are now willing to pose naked for him.
Including, apparently, Blackbeard.
Or: Ed poses for a portrait in the nude, and Lucius has to watch Stede go through a life-altering internal crisis, witness a frankly upsetting level of sexual tension, and deal with the most fidgety portrait subject ever. At least he gets to ogle Blackbeard while he's at it. For the sake of art. Obviously.
