"That is not proper." Lan Xichen looked away again. He fiddled with Liebing, then tried to continue playing the Song of Clarity, but the notes halted awkwardly.
And the melody stopped completely when he felt Nie Mingjue's hand on his earlobe.
"I didn't know ears can get this red." Nie Mingjue's smile had widened into a grin. "Xichen, are you hiding something from me?"
"Let... Let go. This is not proper." Lan Xichen covered his ear with his hand. When Nie Mingjue went for the other one, he had to drop Liebing to cover that one as well.
But then, Liebing was snatched. Nie Mingjue sat up straight, waving the xiao. "Right, Xichen, I've let go!"
"Stop it!" Lan Xichen said, trying to grab his xiao back. "Give it back to me!"
Nie Mingjue laughed, shuffling over as far as possible from the edge of the bed. He held up the xiao at arm's length, and without thinking Lan Xichen chased to grab it back. As a result, he lost balance—

The misty sheets of rain passed through souls, just passing through, from a different plane altogether. And yet in the cold blank rain a pair of souls huddled together for warmth, warmth which their bodies would never have anymore, but who knew if souls could warm each other?
"Remind me why we were buried together?" The smaller soul, with a red dot of cinnabar on his forehead, asked to the one whose arms enveloped him.
"I told you I don't remember," his companion replied gruffly. He could still recall his own name—Nie Mingjue—but of course he would soon forget it, like all the others. Like how Jin Guangyao had forgotten his.
Was it a quick process? Did it take a mere ten days, or had a hundred years passed? Seasons came and went, but who knew how many days each one took? There was no way to tell time. What would he even need to tell time for? Both of them were already dead.
